American History: Serena Williams born September 26, 1981 is a former professional tennis player and is the younger sister to player Venus Williams, Serena  went pro at just 14 years old and was ranked no.1 in singles by the Women's Tennis Association for 6 years straight.  She went on to win  23 grand slams and is the only player to ever achieve a career golden slam for both singles and doubles. She retired in September in 2022

American History: Venus Ebony Starr Williams born June 17, 1980 is an American professional tennis player. A former world No. 1 in both singles and doubles, Williams has won seven Grand Slam singles titles, five at Wimbledon and two at the US Open. At just 21 years old Venus became the first African American woman to be ranked number 1 in singles tennis during the Open era meaning amateurs and professionals played against each other and became the second to achieve this title in general following Althea Gibson. She is widely regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time.

American History: Althea Gibson born August 25, 1927 was an American tennis and golf player who opened doors by being the first African American woman to push boundaries and cross the line of color for national and international sports. Gibson became the first African American woman to win a grand slam event at the french championship and went on to win both wimbledon and the Us Nationals just the following year. In her career she won 11 grand slams, 5 for singles, 5 for doubles and one for mixed doubles. She was inducted into the tennis hall of fame and the international women's sports hall of fame. She passed away in 2002.

American History: Mary Jackson was born on April 9, 1921, and was an NCSA and NASA mathematician and engineer. For Jackson to become an engineer at NASA, she had to attend special graduate level math and physics classes overseen by the University of Virginia in Hampton High School. However, due to segregation, Jackson had o go before the city of Hampton and get special permission to be allowed in class. Jackson won her case and finished her classes as the only black student in her class. She became the first black female engineer to work for NASA and worked for NASA for 34 years before her retirement in 1985. She sadly passed away in 2005. She was portrayed in the 2016 film "Hidden Figures" by Janelle Monae.

Fun Fact: Did you know that polar bears have black skin. Their fur isn't white--it's see through, so it appears white as it reflects light.

American History: Billie Holiday was born in 1915 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and grew up to become one of the most influential jazz singers of all time. She faced rejection and deadens in her career due to her unique singing style and race. She fought and made a name for herself through her own perseverance and strength. Her career was sadly cut short when Holiday lost her battle to substance addiction in 1959. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame in 2000. Her legacy is continued through the music and story that she left behind.
