The Single Leaf Project

An Interdisciplinary Project from the University of New Mexico Honors College.

A Single Leaf

This project began with the idea put forth in J.R.R. Tolkien's short story "Leaf By Niggle" that many small and seemingly insignificant things can join together to create something of beauty and significance. It is our hope that through this site we can better understand Tolkien’s life and works through the places with which he was most familiar. Locations of particular significance to Tolkien's life are here presented together, and though individually they do not tell much, as a group they reveal a life that is simultaneously unique and perfectly ordinary. One location at a time, we can come to view the world as he did, and consequently bring new insights to the world of Middle-earth.

This site is meant to be used in a number of ways. If you happen to find yourself in Birmingham or Oxford, we have provided an interactive map to aid you in exploring the many locations associated with Tolkien. For many of these locations we have provided the site's historical information, its relation to Tolkien, and elements to reflect upon while visiting. If you are not so lucky as to be in Birmingham or Oxford, the site can serve as a sort of virtual tour through our pictures and our group's insights. Whether you are a scholar, a long-time fan, or brand new to Tolkien, we hope that you find the site both informative and entertaining.
