Welcome to THE SHIN Laboratory in the School of Electrical Engineering at Korea University, Seoul, South Korea. 

우리 연구실에서는 차세대 무선통신 시스템에 대한 전반적인 연구를 수행하고 있습니다. 특히 4차 산업혁명으로 인해 사물 인터넷 (IoT) 시대에 다양하고 방대한 정보 전달 수요에 발맞춰 신개념 통신 시스템 설계 및 관련 원천 기술을 연구하고 있습니다. 무인 항공기 및 (저궤도/정지궤도) 인공위성 등의 새로운 응용 분야에 필요한 통신 및 네트워크 기술에 대해서도 연구를 수행중입니다.

Our laboratory focuses on the research field in the Next-Generation of Wireless Communication Systems (Beyond 5G and 6G wireless networks) and Machine Learning Applications with an emphasis on information/communication theory, signal processing, and machine learning. Our current research interests include the following topics but not limited to:

• The paper, "Distributed Rate-Splitting Multiple Access for Multilayer Satellite Communications," has been accepted to IEEE Transactions on Communications, Apr. 2024 [arXiv], which is a joint work with Prof. Bruno Cleckx at Imperial College London, UK. 

• The paper, "Wi-MIR: A CSI Dataset for Wi-Fi Based Multi-Person Interaction Recognition," has been accepted to IEEE Access, Apr. 2024. A CSI dataset for WiFi based Multi-Person Interection Recognition  is now publicly available [CSI Dataset], [Paper]. 

• Prof. Shin has been selected as one of the IEEE Featured Authors that appeared on the IEEE Xplore front page. IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional organization, with over 460,000 members in over 190 countries [Link], [Screenshot]. 

• Our new magazine article, "Integrated Sensing and Communications for IoT: Synergies with Key 6G Technology Enablers," has been accepted to IEEE Internet of Things Magazine, Apr. 2024 [arXiv].

• The paper, "A GDOP-Based Low-Complexity LEO Satellite Subset Selection for Positioning," has been accepted to IEEE Systems Journal, Mar. 2024.

• Prof. Shin is serving for the IEEE ComSoc Asia/Pacific Region Board as Vice-chair of the Chapters Coordination Committee (2024-2025) [Link].

• The paper, "RIS-Empowered LEO Satellite Networks for 6G: Promising Usage Scenarios and Future Directions," has been accepted to IEEE Communications Magazine (IF: 11.2), Feb. 2024 [arXiv]. 

• Juha Park has been awarded the Silver Prize in the 30th Samsung Humantech Paper Awards (삼성휴먼테크논문대상 Communication & Networks 분과 은상) in Feb. 2024 [Link].

• Sangmin Han has been awarded KICS Haedong Best Paper Award (한국통신학회 해동우수논문 우수상) in Feb. 2024.

This is a joint work with Prof. Moe Win's group at MIT, USA.

• Prof. Shin is serving for the IEEE ICC 2024 workshop (Denver, USA) and IEEE WCNC 2024 workshop (Dubai, UAE) on Integrated, Intelligent, and Ubiquitous Connectivity for 6G and Beyond as a TPC chair. 

• Prof. Shin is serving for IEEE ICC 2024 (Denver, USA) - Communication Theory Symposium and Wireless Communications Symposium as a TPC member. 

• The paper "Coordinated Rate-Splitting Multiple Access for Integrated Satellite-Terrestrial Networks with Super-Common Message" has been accepted to IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology (IF: 6.8), Sept. 2023 [arXiv]. 

• Our new magazine article, "Indexed Multiple Access with Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces: The Reflection Tuning Potential," has been accepted to IEEE Communications Magazine (IF: 11.2), Sept. 2023 [arXiv].

• Shin LAB moved to the School of Electrical Engineering (also with the Department of Communication Engineering), Korea University, in September 2023. 

• Our RSMA magazine article "Rate-Splitting Multiple Access for 6G Networks: Ten Promising Scenarios and Applications" has been accepted to IEEE Network Magazine (IF: 9.3), July 2023 [arXiv].

• The paper entitled "Outage Analysis of Alamouti-NOMA Scheme for Hybrid Satellite-Terrestrial Relay Networks" has been accepted to IEEE Internet of Things Journal (IF: 10.238) in Nov. 2022. This is joint work with Prof. Mojtaba Vazei (Villanova University, USA).

• Prof. Wonjae Shin has been reappointed as Visiting Research Collaborator in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Princeton University (Mar. 2021 through Feb. 2022)

• Given the interests and increasing activities on Rate Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA) for beyond 5G, we have created a new IEEE ComSoc WTC Special Interest Group together with Prof. Bruno Clerckx (Chair)'s group at Imperial College London, UK.

• Prof. Wonjae Shin and his group will move to the Department of Electrical Engineering, Ajou University, Korea (March 2021).

• Wonjae Shin has been selected as the 2020 recipients of the IEEE ComSoc Asia Pacific Young Researcher Award (IEEE 젊은연구자상) in Oct. 2020. • The paper entitled "Joint Time Allocation for Wireless Energy Harvesting Decode-and-Forward Relay Based IoT Networks with Rechargeable and Non-Rechargeable Batteries," has been accepted to IEEE Internet of Things Journal (IF: 9.936), Aug. 2020.

• Jihye Ahn was awarded KICS Haedong Best Paper Award (한국통신학회 해동우수논문상) in Aug. 2020 

• The paper entitled "Optimized Shallow Neural Networks for Sum-Rate Maximization in Energy Harvesting Downlink" has been accepted to IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications (IF: 11.420), July 2020.

• Wonjae Shin and co-authors Mojtaba Vaezi (Villanova University, USA), Byungju Lee (Samsung Research, Korea), Jungwoo Lee (Seoul National University, Korea), and David J. Love (Purdue University, USA), and H. Vincent Poor (Princeton University, USA) have been selected as the 2020 recipients of the IEEE Communication Society's Fred W. Ellersick Prize. The award is given to the most influential paper in any Communications Society magazine in the previous 3 calendar years.  Prof. Shin will receive the award at the IEEE ICC 2020 conference in June 2020. • The paper entitled "Blind Interference Alignment with ISI: A New Look at OFDM for K-User Interference Channels,"  has been accepted to IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing in May 2020. 

• Our two papers appeared in IEEE Best Readings in Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access - Topic: Overviews and Tutorials and Multiple Antenna Aided NOMA (Apr. 2020).

• Wonjae Shin is co-organizing Workshop on Rate-Splitting and Robust Interference Management for Beyond 5G at IEEE PIMRC '20 in London, UK.

• Wonjae Shin is awarded The Outstanding Researcher Award from PNU BK-21 Plus (Mar. 2020).

• Wonjae Shin has been elevated to the grade of IEEE Senior Member, which is an honor bestowed only to those who have made significant contributions to the profession, and fewer than 10 percent of IEEE members achieve this level of recognition (Feb. 2020).

• Wonjae Shin is recognized as IEEE Transactions on Communications Exemplary Reviewer 2019. Fewer than 2 percent  of all IEEE TCOM reviewers in 2019 receive this recognition for their high quality of reviews (Feb. 2020).

• Jungwoo Do was awarded KICS Winter Conference Undergraduate Student Paper Awards (한국통신학회 동계학술발표회 학부 우수논문) in Feb. 2020. 

• Wonjae Shin is serving for JCCI (The 30th Joint Conference on Communications and Information), which will be held in Busan as a Program Committee.

• Our group has been awarded the Korean Institute of Power Electronics Award (전력전자학회장상) at Intelligent Electronics Contest in July 2019 [News].

• Our group is funded by the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) grant (신진연구자지원사업) for 3 years (100K USD/year) since Mar. 2019.

• Wonjae Shin was awarded  2018 Highly Cited Paper Award at SNU ECE in Dec. 2018 [News].
