At The Shift, we work with passionate high school students to explore the deeper meaning of service through the Five Stages of Service Learning: investigation, preparation, action, reflection, and demonstration. We begin with idea generation activities that invite students to explore their personal passions, interests, skills and talents—the foundation for meaningful and authentic work. Through the investigation stage, students identify real-world issues by researching, interviewing, observing communities locally and globally and collecting and analyzing data. In preparation, they build knowledge, connect with partner organizations, and develop detailed plans rooted in collaboration and respect. During action, students implement their projects—whether through direct service, advocacy, or creative campaigns—engaging with communities as collaborators, not recipients. Ongoing reflection allows them to make sense of their experience, deepen self-awareness, and connect their emotions and learning. Finally, through demonstration, students document and share their work publicly, using storytelling, presentations, and creative media to inspire others and celebrate the impact of their learning.
