Issue #1: "An Average Day in Sprucedale"
Originally, the comic was originally called, "Meet . . . Well, Everyone" and would be more of a "Meet-the-Cast" introduction to the series.
Joan and Banda Knight were planned to show up in the Issue, and they would have shown up in the climax. However, they were cut in the final version of the Script because they didn't fit the revised story.
Originally, the "Gore-met" monster wasn't gonna use Madame Charlotte as a base at all. However, due to difficulties for designing the monster and realizing Charlotte made a great base for the monster. The monster was designed using Charlotte as the base for it.
Issue #2: "Never too lake!"
This comic was meant to be the First Issue, with the title originally known as, "Aquatic Annoyance".
The comic had a completely different setting before being turned into a lake. It was meant to take place in a waterworks plant, and Freude's army would have taken over the place. There would have also been an Old Man that runs the place who Poker brainwashes.
Carlos wasn't added until the story of the issue was redone, combining the ideas of the Issue and another Issue where he had more of a role.
Park Ranger #2 (the brown-haired one) is loosely based off of Darnius himself.
Issue #3: "Petal Peril!"
The original title for the Issue was gonna be, "Plant Strife" it was changed to "Petal Peril" from a suggestion by one of Darnius' friends.
This Issue contains two cameos where they appear as tourists:
The first cameo is Blunky from the Blunky Comics, he is the rabbit that is in the tour group.
The second cameo is Vacated, the voice actor for Poker in the SL Comic dubs, he's the Tourist that becomes suspicious of Magnolings spying on them.
Botan's design was inspired by Leponte from Klonoa 2 and Pon Pirrin from Space Channel 5: Part 2. Botan has Leponte's round physique and color scheme, while he has Pon Pirrin's gimmick of hiding in a bigger plant and ability to dance.
Banda Knight saying, "Hey, you want to see something cool?" before going into the Cyclops plant is a reference to Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
Issue #4: "Too Cruel for School!"
This is the first Issue, besides Issue #1, that doesn’t feature an Elite Robot.
In Addition, this is the first Issue not to feature Freude, Poker or Yami.
Merge and Lavender are based on Purge and Shadow from Space Channel 5: Part 2.
There was a part that was scrapped in the final version in the script where Harold and Dyna would approach Merge before being stopped by Lavender.
The scene would also mimic the “Slap of God” meme that originated from the 1987 film, “Moonstruck”.
The last two panels in the Issue were actually last-minute additions because the page on the script wasn't completely filled up.
Issue #5: "Feline Miserable!"
Feralina’s design is a mix of Slash Man from Mega Man 7 and Clawroline from Kirby and the Forgotten Land.
As for the type of cat Feralina is, she is a Tiger.
Lunkest the Jackrabbit is a parody of Blunky from the Blunky comic series.
Finn-Dickie is a spoof of Winn-Dixie, a grocery store Darnius worked at.
Pizza Power is a small reference to Pizza Tower.
There were two other names suggested by BlunkstheFunks for the Pizza Place, those being “Antonio’s” and “Mutagen Crumb”, with the latter being a nod to the Mutagen substance from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Issue #6: "Allison and Jinn's Chiller Thriller!"
Ms. Freeze's design is based off of Chill Man from Mega Man 10, and her name is a reference off of Mr. Freeze from the Batman Franchise.
Page 21 and the start of 22 re-enact Kazuya's Ending in Tekken 2.
Saga was a last-minute addition to the Issue because, according to Darnius, "It doesn't feel like a Saga Legends Issue without him participating in some way.
Issue #7: "Capsule Conundrum, Part 1!"
This Issue is a remake/re-imagining of an old Saga Legends Comic from 2021.
With this in mind, Dr. Vesania and Jakkal were not in the original version, they're new additions to the story.
The Elite "Prismia" was a winning submission in a Custom Elite Contest held on a Discord Server with friends.
Due to the Steamboat Willie short entering Public Domain in 2024, the short's version of Mickey Mouse was added into the Issue as a cameo.
Jakkal was based off an unused character in an older version of Saga Legends.
Issue #8: "Capsule Conundrum, Part 2!"
Freude saying "We pretended to be a bar of soap and gave them all the slip" is a reference to a scene Sonic X's English Dub where Dr. Eggman says almost the exact same line.
This bit in the Issue was suggested by one of Darnius' friends at the time it was made.
Poker carrying a bomb to the Capsule Room is a nod to a joke one of Darnius' friends made when the original was made.
Page 6 of this Issue is considered by Darnius as, by far, the fastest-made page in SL History.
This is the first Issue without any new characters bios to release alongside it.
Issue #9: "Surf's Up and Arms!"
Ampray, along with the issue as a whole, was birthed from an inside joke in Darnius' Friend group when he was watching them play VR Chat.
This is also the origin of the "WEEGH! BLEGH! NYEGH!" quote in his bio.
In spite of Ampray being from a joke, he is the Elite listed as "Amp" in Issue #1.
Ampray's design is based off of Jet Stingray from Mega Man X4, he even strikes a similar pose in both Issue #9's cover and the render in his Bio.
Some of the characters were going to have their summer outfits depicted in the 2023 summer drawing. This was before the Gen 2 character designs were made.
Along with this, Raquel was going to take the role as the lifeguard before Lady Lorraine took the role. She was also going to retain the lifeguard outfit she had in the 2023 summer drawing.
Issue #10: "Shady Switcharoo!"
This whole comic was an old, very obscure idea dating far back from early 2021.
The story was based off the "For Pigs the Bell Tolls" chapter from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. Specifically, the second half with the mind-swap scenario, and Rodriguez being the Doopliss equivalent.
Tullitpica being turned to a bear is a reference to the Twilight Townsfolk being turned into pigs by Doopliss.
In the script, after Saga, as Rodriguez was taken away by Vespertilio, he was originally going to be taken back to Freude's Fortress.
Rodriguez' design is a combination of Willy Wonka from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and the make-up is inspired by Reala from the NiGHTS series.
Vespertilio's design is based off of Shademan.exe from the Megaman Battle Network series, with the color scheme is based off of Bat Bomber from the Bomberman Jetters anime.
Vespertilio's Bio quote "I'll even whoop your ass, second time" is based off the joke from Horton Hears a Who where Vladikoff states, "Then I'll devour it, second time!"
Issue #11: "Poker and the USB Caper!"
The idea of the comic originates from an inside joke by Darnius and Bama creator, Microwavehead.
Ilia is a reused idea from the Custom Elite contest entry, and is not based off of anything.
Her bio pose references the original drawing by Mushroom.
Originally, the movie Ilia mentions at the end was going to be "Paddington 2", but it was eventually changed to "The Mist".
The change was due to the fact "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent" already did a similar joke.
Issue #12: "Shadows at the Museum!"
The comic was originally titled as "The Amaranthieves Strike Back", but was changed due to the fact they are revealed around the second-half of the Issue.
The climax was going to be completely different, as it would've featured a giant Pilon character named "Saturn", and would've ended with the Amaranthieves getting away.
Inspector Gruff's design was a combination of Inspector Tawashi from Astro Boy and Inspector Zenigata from Lupin III.
Gruff's Zenigata-esque outfit was a last minute design change before the Issue began illustration.
The I.B.I.S. Soldiers are also a nod to Zenigata having many Officers at his disposal.
Capitan Omega's design was partially based off of Delta from Astro Boy (2003).
Merge stating, "Has he told you he has failed to catch me 17 different times? I feel like it's going to be at least 18 now" is a reference to Snapcube's Realtime Fandub of Sonic The Hedgehog (2006).
Issue #13: “The Obsidian Destroyer”
This is the first Issue without a traditional “Thank You” page, instead it teases a Season 2.
This is the Issue with the shortest time to fully write a script, spanning over 2-3 days.
This includes making changes to the script, including accurately writing Arc’s occasional japanese dialogue.
“Arc’s 2022nd Log” is a nod to the year the character of Arc was created.
Donna Pesce was actually going to get killed by Arc, but it was changed to her getting beaten to unconsciousness due to Darnius wanting to use her in future issues.
Her corpse would’ve been deflated as well, like actual Pufferfish when they die.
Like the season premiere Issue, An Average Day in Sprucedale, this issue has a total of 28 pages, which includes the cover and outro pages.
What Arc says in Page 25 translates to “Your time is up, newbie!”
Issue #14: “One Less Man . . .”
It initially had the title of “The Inoperative” right until the illustration process where it was then changed to, “One Less Man . . .” to make the tie to the story better.
One of the initial ideas for this Issue was to make it a story about Clash and Hazel cheering Saga up by having a day-out together.
Remnants of this idea in the final Issue include: Saga’s Trauma, Mac’s Cheesitorium, and Carlos’ inclusion.
The FR-Units that guarded the gate referring to Arc as a kitty is a nod to the DaVinki Twins who have made videos on finding a cat and revealing it to be a caracal.
It’s also based on the fact that Arc’s face resembles that of a Caracal cat, and a recurring joke in Darnius’ friend group that she is a “Floppa Lady”.
What Arc says in Page Six translates to, “You brown-nosed bastard!”
Originally, Clash and Hazel would’ve fought Vespertilio instead of Burst in the Issue’s Climax, but was changed to Burst to give her more to do than being a random cameo.
This also marks Burst as the first non-canon SL character to have a canon incarnation, where she first appears in the 4th of July 2023 drawing.
Issue #15: “The Elusive Exotic”
The cover of the Issue references Bomberman Max 2: Blue Advance’s box art.
Mainly because Exotic's design was inspired by MAX from the Bomberman games.
This is the first Issue to have a cut page from the script during Illustration, it would’ve been the final page to reveal more about Exotic.
It was cut during the illustration process to retain the mystery of Exotic.
The page was never illustrated, but it was written.
Freude and Hazel clashing in Page 25 is a reference to the pre-fight banter seen in Mortal Kombat 1.
Saga’s nightmare at the beginning was added to the comic’s script before the illustration process began.
Archie-Tect and Titanius' final moments is a re-enactment of Five's death from Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
The only difference is that Titanius says, "I only wanted to do my job" instead of "I only wanted to do my duty".
Saga saying "Bad Touch! Bad Touch! Stranger Danger!" when seeing Donna Pesce is a quote lifted from Jontron's Foodfight video.
The Security Robots' design was based partially off of Fake Man from Mega Man 9.
Issue #16: “Hocus, Pocus, Locus!”
Diplo’s “Heartwater” persona was originally meant to be a Teacher, but was changed due to Darnius believing it wouldn’t be right, so she was changed to a secretary.
Momooku’s Hypnosis Spell was going to be a swirling effect, but was changed to a circular effect due to being too difficult to draw.
This is why Momooku’s staff in the artwork shows a swirling motion when it’s circular in the Issue.
The Chaos Cabal was originally going to be called, “The Cruel Cabal” and had different members, but Betilla being the leader was the only constant.
There’s concept art that shows she was going to be able to switch to a Voluptuous Woman form, but that idea was scrapped for Diplo to be put on the team.
This Issue is the second most-memed issue, next to “Poker and The USB Caper” in Darnius’ friend group.
This mainly due to Diplo and how Darnius believes she will have simps.
Chariot was heavily inspired by E-123 Omega from the Sonic the Hedgehog series.
Both are owned by a military function.
Both are robots invented by a mechanic.
Both brute-force their way in combat.
Chariot claiming “I call dibs” to Betilla’s Monster is lifted from Omega saying the same thing in Shadow Generations: Dark Beginnings.
The only difference is that his design was inspired by Vile MK. 2 from Megaman X2.
Issue #17: “Construction Fight!”
The cover of the Issue is a direct reference to Asterix the Gaul.
Poker was originally supposed to get caught in the Tsunami Robot Formation by not moving out of the way, but was changed to him standing atop of it in the illustration process.
Arc’s tuxedo in the date cutaway gag references Kazama Kiryu from the Yakuza series.
Yami’s dress single-handedly altered the way the page she appears is made, due to her flower pattern coming from a material tool on Ibis Paint.
The flower material was put behind every other layer and the dress itself didn’t need to be colored.
Archie-Tect saying, “I have no mouth and I must vomit,” is a reference to the short-story “I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream”.
Exotic is the first SL character to call a robot a “clanker”.
Vespertilio’s damaged eye in the issue looking different from the concept art is due to a mistake during the illustration process.
Issue #18: “Her Visit.”
Darnius has stated that this is the second Issue he disliked working on, the other being Issue #6.
The Issue was originally named “Mother Sincerest” before being changed to “Her Visit”.
Kaimon has been the most difficult character for Darnius to design, undergoing several changes.
The original version of the Issue had to be completely rewritten to fix the slow-pacing of the Issue.
While the majority of the original version remained intact, there was a cut portion from the Issue where we see Jakkal give the fake broken mask to Vesania.
Another element that was removed was the inclusion of Saga’s sister, Olinda, who had to be scrapped as she was dragging the issue out.
This is why she only gets mentioned in the final page of the issue.
There is a mistake on Page 15 where Jakkal was supposed to use his energy hands to lift the car, but this created a new lore piece where Jakkal has superhuman fluids.
This is due to Vesania wanting Jakkal to be a brute force type of minion.
On Page 25, Jakkal was supposed to say something in the final panel, but was edited due to an error on Darnius’ end.
The error being he forgot to make a comic bubble.
Issue #19: “Urban Woman of Mystery.”
This is the first (and probably final) issue to have more than one writer, for this issue being TheDudeWithTheHat, the voice of Clash in the Saga Legends Comic Dubs.
With that being said, Darnius still illustrated the issue on his own.
This is one of the most difficult issues to give a title, because Darnius wanted the Issue to be a spy parody.
The title of the Issue is a reference to Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery.
The rumors of Saga hating pufferfish was an inside joke between Darnius and TheDudeWithTheHat when Issue #15 released.
Saga hating rabbits is a nod to the “It’s Easter, Saga” pagewunner.
Shy claiming she works for “the Company” is based on how FBI Agents will refer to the agency as “the Company”.
The song Clash shows Shy is a direct spoof of “Underneath It All” by Lady Saw and No Doubt.
The latter band was also spoofed in the issue as “Full Doubt”.
Arc was supposed to make an appearance in the Issue’s climax, but was cut due to the climax going near the maximum page limit.
Clash would’ve found out that she tried to kill Saga in this sequence as well.
Clash and Exotic were going to fight in the climax, but was also cut because of the page limit.
