I volunteer as a docent at the Seymour Marine Discovery Center. During bi-weekly work and special events, I lead hour-long tours of the Seymour Center and associated research facilities, highlighting for diverse visitors of all ages the role of research in understanding and protecting the marine environment. I also teach visitors about the local marine life of Monterey Bay using Seymour Center's dry exhibits, aquaria, tide pool touch table, and Swell shark touch pool.

As one of three Student Members-at-Large, I was on the board of the Society for Marine Mammalogy, one of marine mammal science's primary scientific societies. A large part of my work involved organizing the student-focused elements of the SMM’s biennial conference, including professional development workshops, networking opportunities, travel grants, and social events. I also engaged the SMM’s global student membership by facilitating monthly seminars by prominent researchers, coordinating and supporting student chapters located across the world, and managing social media.

The peer-to-peer program supports the transition into graduate school, pairing each first-year graduate student in my department with two more senior graduate student mentors who have volunteered to provide advice and emotional support. As co-chair, I determined mentor-mentee pairings using the results of extensive surveys, organized mentorship and mental health trainings for the mentors and mentees, and planned monthly events to introduce first-year students to each other, their mentors, and Santa Cruz.

The WiSE Naturalist Group organizes monthly educational walks throughout the local natural environments, providing an inclusive opportunity for University of California, Santa Cruz undergraduate and graduate students, community members, and families to interact and learn about nature. As a co-leader, I planned and coordinated events, create and distribute advertising, and participate in the walks. I also worked with WiSE leadership to develop a program to educate participants about the marine animals, and especially the marine mammals, which are often in such close contact with humans in Monterey Bay.
