Educational Framework

The information category of an educational ‘subject’ is used by ICOL in the sense of ‘niche’ or ‘branch of knowledge’. On the other hand, the word topic is used in the sense of ‘title’ or ‘the aspect that is chosen within the subject’. Thus, it can be said that a topic is a subset of a subject.

A wiki is “a collaborative tool that allows students to contribute and modify one or more pages of topic related materials. Wikis are collaborative in nature and facilitate community-building within a theme. Essentially, a wiki is a web page with an open-editing system. According to a recent Essay on Teaching Excellence, wikis provide a vehicle for exercising most, if not all, of Bloom’s ‘higher order thinking’ activities.

In on line wiki classrooms, although the instructor provides most of the course content, students have an opportunity to utilise the wiki to build their own body of knowledge. Wikis shift students from ‘consumer of knowledge’ to ‘creators of knowledge,’ developing critical thinking skills, to learn from one another, and to improve their ability to work in groups. There are many benefits of using wiki topics for on line education.

Examples of wikis on the theme of ‘The Planet We Share’ which were produced on the wikispaces platform (2005-2018). Year on year they recieved between 15-1000 unique world wide visitors per day.
