Yes, we believe in the existence of hell. We further believe that those who die in their sins without a saving relationship with Jesus Christ will experience the suffering of eternal punishment. What we DON'T believe, is that eternal punishment is necessarily everlasting. Contrary to popular, conventional interpretations, the terms "eternal" and "forever and ever" are not always synonymous. So, while someone might experience eternal suffering in the next life, this suffering can serve a redemptive purpose or have a restorative outcome.
In the late fourth century, the church formally adopted the creed we know today as the Nicene Creed. This statement of faith is recited in churches throughout the world and is formally affirmed by the Catholic Church, the Orthodox Church, Anglicans, and many protestant denominations. What most people don't realize, however, is that this creed was adamantly defended by the well-known Christian Universalist, Gregory Nyssen. In fact, Gregory was chosen by the council that formed the creed to be one of its champions. Simply put, the council chose him - an outspoken universalist - to be a prominent face of orthodoxy.
