Research
chemical reactions at Interfaces
Detailed reaction mechanisms in chemical reactions are important to develop new high-performance materials, to reveal biological functions, etc. Whereas in situ measurement of structure and reaction dynamics can be quite hard, molecular simulations can provide valuable information to elucidate the molecular mechanism such as the reaction energies, (electronic) structure, dynamics, and so on.
Therefore, we aim at elucidating chemical reactions in condensed phases at a molecular level by ab initio electronic structure calculations and/or molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. We sometimes collaborate with experimental groups to validate theoretical modeling and offer the molecular-level mechanism. At the same time, we develop theoretical tools to more accurately and more efficiently calculate the reaction energies, physical properties, etc.

Structure and Dynamics at Interfaces by Molecular Dynamics (MD) Simulation
Chemical reactions such as proton transfer and electron transfer occur at various solid/liquid interfaces such as electrodes. However, in situ measurement at buried interfaces is generally quite difficult because this requires the surface sensitivity of the measurement. To reveal the molecular mechanism of chemical reactions, among the powerful methods to study interfaces is the surface-sensitive spectroscopy such as the sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy and the surface-enhanced Infrared spectroscopy (SEIRAS). These techniques extract molecular information by measuring the molecular vibration exclusively at interfaces. The applications ranges from simple gas/liquid and gas/solid interfaces to solid/liquid and liquid/liquid interfaces.
The band assignment and/or detailed molecular structure in such spectroscopy can sometimes be elusive. On the other hand, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation can extract valuable information ranging from molecular structure/dynamics to reaction mechanisms by analyzing the experimental spectra. Especially, such spectroscopy at solid/liquid interfaces has developed significantly in recent decades yet numerous issues remains to be solved.
Therefore, the purpose of our research is to understand interfacial phenomena by examining the surface-sensitive spectroscopy at mainly solid/liquid interfaces by MD simulation.
