Qatar Foundation - Earthna Centre for a Sustainable Future (2023-2024) - Co-Investigator

We are investigating the impact of international food trade flows on food security within the context of small open economies with low food self-sufficiency. Using Qatar as our case study and leveraging a comprehensive dataset, we explore historical dynamics of international food trade flows and examine the effect of 'Qatar Blockage' on food security while accounting for geographic, climatic, and economic factors.

European Commission - Joint Research Centre (2022) - Principal Investigator

What are the determinants and dynamics of regional convergence in the EU? I empirically determine the economic and spatial reasons for any co-movements across NUTS2 regions and examine the extent to which the EU Cohesion policy has accelerated synchronous economic growth trajectories across regions.

EnergyREV Consortium (2020 – 2021)

What explains the spatial variation in smart, local energy systems (SLES) in the UK? Being part of the EPSRC-funded consortium project EnergyREV, I was responsible for identifying the drivers of spatial variation in SLES using a wide range of energy, social, institutional and geographic factors that may help explain why some areas have SLES and others do not.

OECD - Carbon leakage, agriculture and emissions mitigation policies (2019)

The agricultural sector has been exempted from emissions mitigation policies such as carbon taxes and emission trading schemes. This policy project commissioned by the OECD-Trade and Agriculture Directorate reviews the climate policies that may at risk of carbon leakage. I led the development and drafted an OECD Working Paper that critically reviews the literature on emissions mitigations policies and their implications for carbon leakage.

Minderoo Foundation & SystemIQ - Economic and environmental implications of a virgin plastic feedstock tax (2019)

This project, funded by Minderoo Foundation and led by Prof Paul Ekins, has assessed the economic and environmental implications of a virgin plastic feedstock tax. I was responsible for the development of an econometric model that evaluates the policy effectiveness of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme (EU Waste Framework Directive 2008/98/EC) aiming the reduction of waste and the increase of re-use and recycling.

UK Climate Change Committee (CCC) - Consultancy on the redevelopment of the UK industrial indicators (2018)

I contributed to advising the UK Climate Change Committee (CCC) in revamping their industrial indicators related to energy efficiency, carbon intensity, and emissions reduction. Our contribution is acknowledged in the 2018 Progress Report to Parliament about the historical reduction of greenhouse emissions in the UK.

UK Department for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) - UK Energy Demand Model (EDM) (2017)

I contributed in the improvement of the industrial module of the UK BEIS Energy Demand Model (EDM). The model is an important component in UK energy policy-making as it is used to produce the Energy and Emissions Projections, an annual report which analyses and projects future UK energy use and greenhouse gas emissions up to 2035. The Energy Demand Model (including the module developed by our team at UCL) is also used to fulfil international reporting obligations, including those to the EU and UNFCCC, and to answer other internal or parliamentary queries.
