Welcome Nommies!
The Nommo Review is a literary magazine focused on narrative medicine. Medicine goes beyond prescriptions, treatments, and diagnoses. It encompasses the livelihoods and stories of those who live it. We are dedicated to bridging the gap between clinician and patient, and honouring the raw human experiences within healthcare to battle the social isolation and uncertainty that can come with it. We publish stories, memoirs, and poems about illness, care, and empathy, as well as critical essays that look beyond the chart.
What is narrative medicine?
First pioneered at Columbia University in the 1990s, narrative medicine is a field of medical humanities that uses storytelling and literary analysis to improve clinical practice, empathy, and patient care. We also intend to use it to humanize illness and healthcare.
Submissions are OPEN!
Our first issue, Persistence, is all about the experiences of caregiving and living with chronic illness. We are seeking poetry, prose, and memoirs exploring what it means to endure when health is not static, and cure is not the end goal. We want stories from those living with chronic conditions, those caring for loved ones with worsening health, and those navigating the long, quiet spaces of long-term care. What does it mean to build a life in the space between recovery and endurance?
We offer guaranteed editorial feedback on ALL accepted submissions and the option to stay anonymous with your work. Contributors to our inaugural issue receive priority consideration for all our future issues.
All submissions are due November 22nd, 2026
