Hello Nighthawks! Similar to last month, I am going to spotlight another club we have here at Northfield: Women in Literature!
What is Women in Literature?
Women in Lit is a student run book club that focuses on empowering female students through books. The content of the books are either written by female authors or feature powerful and prominent female protagonists.
What does Women in Literature do?
Since it is a book club, meetings are centered around discussing the book or service projects involving literature. At the beginning of each semester, club members brainstorm ideas for books and they are put into a form to vote. Once a book is chosen, predictions are made with the summary and members are assigned to read up to a certain chapter. In the next meeting they talk about the book and everyone shares their varying thoughts and opinions. Currently, Women in Lit is reading “Bluebird” by Sharon Cameron -- a book about a young woman with a secret mission related to Nazi experiments during the post-war era.
How can I get involved?
Meetings right now are flexibly scheduled because of finals week and winter break but are typically every other Tuesday. The last meetings of this semester are on December 2 and December 9. People are allowed to join whenever they’d like but next semester is when the club starts fresh with a new book. You can also be involved by participating in the book drive that is happening now!
What is the Women in Literature Book Drive?
Currently, the club has a goal of donating 150 books to BookGive, working towards providing less fortunate youths with access to books. It runs until December 12 and anyone, club members or not, can donate. You can donate gently used books to any of the boxes in the English classrooms around campus. However, if you aren’t sure if your classroom has one, Ms. Garland—the club sponsor—has a box in her room at B5-114. The only guidelines are that you cannot donate textbooks, comic books, magazines, religious texts, or extremely damaged books. For more information, you can look out for pink flyers around the school or visit @nhswomeninlit on Instagram (white and gold profile picture). Any amount of books are appreciated and help work towards a great cause.
