Hello Nighthawks! This month, the music department held a ceremony to induct new and existing Tri M members. It consisted of speeches by the officers Ms. Rodriguez-Bracey, Mr. Moen, and Mr. Miller. After this, each inductees' name was called and after receiving their certificate, gathered on the risers (platform with different heights) to sing the loyalty song. It was a quick yet meaningful ceremony. But what is Tri-M? As a member, I'm here to explain it and bring more attention to the club!
In a literal sense, Tri M stands for Modern Music Masters. It explains that young masters of musical instruments will foster a community and place where it can be shared and enjoyed by and with other young people, always keeping music modern. In terms of the club, it creates this space for musicians other than just a music class. Its only requirement for membership is that you currently take or have taken a music class at Northfield and stay in good standing by showing up to meetings and staying involved. In simpler terms, it is similar to the National Honors Society or HOSA, just for music.
Tri M does many things! It focuses mainly on community engagement and supporting young musicians. Last year, some officers and members went to McAuliffe middle school and taught sectionals to a band class, teaching how music has to be learned in groups first before it can come together into a beautiful and cohesive piece. It also encouraged them to come to Northfield to help grow our music program. Last spring, we held a practice-a-thon, where students logged the number of minutes they practiced their instrument and gathered sponsors (friends, family, teachers) to pay a certain amount of cents per minute. In the end, this money was donated to the music department and the upcoming trip for select music classes to go to the Colorado West Music Festival in Grand Junction! This year, officers hope to do many of these things again! So far, there was a trip to Florida Pitt Waller by the officers inducted at our banquet last year. They instructed the beginner orchestra and it was super successful! There is also a plan for some inductees to go to an open practice at the Colorado Symphony at the end of November to listen in on a practice and have a Q&A session with the musicians!
Meetings before the induction are every Wednesday. At first, they consist of games to get to know your peers, information about upcoming events, and learning the loyalty song. Meetings after induction are every other week. They consist of information about fun community engagement projects, volunteer opportunities at concerts, and more exciting information!
That's a wrap on this article! Hopefully this gives people more clarity about this fairly new club and what it is! The music department is often overlooked or ignored because people don't understand the importance of music and learning instruments, however this club is a great opportunity if you already play an instrument and are looking for more! Also, make sure to check out the band, orchestra, choir, and other concerts on the 12th and 13th of November at 6pm in the cafeteria. There are no tickets and you can show up or leave whenever you need! See you next month (or at a concert…).
