I grew up witnessing grief and loss, as I had many family members pass away. I have witnessed a wide variety of mental health issues and have gone through them myself. I had wanted to choose something that I was passionate about and mental health is what I have experienced the most. Although this project is more remote than some others, I was able to link up with a mental health and substance abuse counselor who is using the resources that I have provided, and handing them out to her patients. I also hung up posters within my schools library. Since then, I had the opportunity to obtain some testimonials from those who have used the apps or have received the recommendations.
This project has taught me to be more patient. I had reached out to several volunteer organizations and was met with some not being available (mainly due to times of operations), and not being responded to at all. I had to improvise and start with the basics. Because of this, I also learned that even the tiny steps matter and can make a difference. As someone who is always focused on helping the most I possibly can, I often tend to forget that sometimes what I want to do, just is not exactly possible at that very moment.
Just because I ran into some issues with my project, I didn't let that stop me, and I plan to continue this website and spreading mental health awareness for those in need.
I think the biggest takeaway from this project not only for myself, but also for everyone, is to check in with those close to you. Don't be afraid to offer help. Try not to criticize and understand that everyone deals with things differently, its all about getting them on one of the many right paths to healing.
