A Legacy served carside: The Story of The Main Drive In
The Main Drive In has been a fixture in Conrad, Montana for decades — not just as a place to grab a burger, but as a beloved community landmark, handed down from one generation to the next.
Originally opened as part of the Tastee-Freez franchise, the building became fully independent when Pershing “Pike” Sutherland took it over in 1977. Pike had a vision for something local, something lasting — and he knew it didn’t need a franchise name to deliver great food and friendly service. Under his ownership, the drive-in became a family operation rooted in small-town pride.
That legacy was passed on to his son, Jeff & wife Connie Sutherland in the 1990's and about ten years ago, it was proudly taken over by his granddaughter Heather Carpenter and her husband Jon. Together, Jon and Heather have kept the heart of the business beating — staying true to its roots while modernizing in all the right places. They still use the original building, the original 1950s grill, and yes — good old-fashioned carhop service.
Now in its third generation of family ownership, The Main Drive In isn’t just a place to eat. It’s a place full of memories, history, laughter, and the unmistakable smell of burgers sizzling on the same grill that’s been working hard for over 60 years. Whether you’re pulling up for the first time or the hundredth, you're part of the story now — and we’re glad you’re here.
