A major part of our research program is dedicated to natural product total synthesis.
The most complex targets come from nature and are known as natural products. Natural product total synthesis is known as the route to making these complex natural products. Prior to my knowledge about these different areas of organic chemistry, I had always enjoyed synthesis problems within my sophomore lecture course. Bursts of energy and excitement to solve these problems persisted throughout both semesters of organic chemistry and their respective labs. I felt synthesis problems mimicked research in that you need to get to point B, much like in most research projects. As I began working on such projects, I found that these synthesis problems mimicked research in the sense that both required one to get from point A to point B. Although you start at point A, you must brainstorm the most effective way to get to point B.
Now that I know there is a world beyond this sophomore level organic chemistry course, natural product total synthesis projects will be explored in my group in graduate school.
Introspection and self-reflection are also a major focus of our group. Growing emotionally and maturing as an individual is part of the human experience. The unpacking of why one is the way that they are and what factors from their childhood caused this is essential. Recognizing the problem areas within oneself allows for growth and understanding, which allows a person to become the best person they can be. Within this group, thoughts, reactions, and impulses are dissected, and their root causes are examined and reflected upon. Acceptance and forgiveness of yourself and worthy individuals promotes this growth.
Applications of these practices will be explored vigorously within our group.
