Undergraduate Students

My name is Colby, and I am going into my fifth year of Environmental Science at the University of Guelph. This summer, I’ll be working with Dr. Liao's group on a collaborative project with the industry partner to investigate how biochar influence plant performance, substrate properties, and discharge water quality in green roof systems. Outside of school and research, I really enjoy being outdoors. Some of my favourite things to do are hiking, fishing, and paddleboarding. I’m also a big sports fan and love playing almost any sport, but if I had to choose a favourite, it would definitely be hockey. I’m extremely excited to be part of the team and look forward to working with everyone!

My name is Caleb Ferguson, I am a 5th year Undergraduate Plant Science Co-op student at the University of Guelph. I am working with Dr. Liao and her group for an undergraduate research course this year. The research investigates the use of biochar to mitigate the impacts of road salt and runoff on plant health in bioretention systems, with a focus on native plant species commonly found in Southern Ontario urban landscapes. I have a background in agricultural crops and weeds from co-op positions, and keep a number of house plants. My free time is often spent listening to music with my cats or playing board games and RPGs with my friends.

My name is Quinn Cassie, I am entering my fifth year of Environmental Science at the University of Guelph. This year I am working with Dr. Liao and her research team to study water quality and wastewater treatment performance in biofilters. The research targets wastewater treatment in the Arctic and the use of native plants and treated biochar to target and remove contaminants. Through Co-op I have experience in agriculture and plant pathogens, as well as experience with water quality analysis. On my own time I love hiking, spending time with friends and family, biking and staying active.
