The internet is a vast neighborhood of communities that transcends geography. There’s functionally a subreddit, tag, or discord server for every niche and one that’s been gaining popularity in recent years is cottagecore. Cottagecore is primarily an aesthetic based around a highly idealized pastoral life consisting of cute houses in the woods, lush flower fields, and dressing like early 1900s colonial motifs never went out of fashion. All of these themes clash considerably with the chronically online young people that use this style often for escapism.
The intention of this body of work is to examine the themes and demographics of cottagecore through its visual style and the interplay of nature vs technology. With that in mind, these pieces have a strong emphasis on color, lighting, and contrast to show the dreamy yet disconnected nature of this subculture.
