Life is beautiful, they say; this statement is not entirely false but would have been more beautiful if we had gotten more. What more do we require? What more do we lack? We require more time. We complain of a short life because of a lack of time. A quick life has become our lifestyle out of compulsion because of the lack of time. The food that we take 2 hours to prepare must be finished in less than 5 minutes; the stress of a year should be relieved in less than a week's vacation; 30-40 long year career should be decided in less than a month; a savings of 35 years is not enough to own a house; and the fun time with friends and family is short-lived. Lack of time had been a concern for us at every stage of our lives.
What if we had a little more time? Was there anyone who had more time and thus could do more of the above? Who would not want that? We are unfortunate, but there were people who could spend enough time on earth. The last article describes it very well. It was about the long lives of our ancestors. When humans first appeared on Earth, they were fortunate to be able to live for around 1000 years and live a fuller life. The life we could only imagine in our heads was their reality. When we compare our lives to theirs, there may be very little difference. They, too, were hungry, thirsty, sleepy, and tired. They also had a 24-hour day. They may also have eaten three times a day, as we do. They may have had less technology and comfort, but their way of life was very similar to ours. Then what could be the reason for the decrease in human life span? Why can't we spend 1000 years on Earth like them? Why are we only given a few decades on this planet? Why has a life of only one century become our destination? Why do we have to say goodbye to the earth at the age of 100? Why is human life today limited to 100 years?
Gone are the days when people needed different gadgets for different purposes. Today, a single smartphone can meet all needs. Phones were not smarter always. But as days went by, our need grew, and so did the results. And now we have what we hold in our hands called a ‘smart’ phone. However, the older keypad phones defeated the smartphones in the race to see who could live the longest. With more features, of course, the time spent on the smartphones increased, but the number of years these phones can be used decreased. Unlimited calls, chats, and media would have kept the user holding onto it for longer, but quickly brought a limit to the phone. The updated phone not only caused problems for itself, but also for its users. Doctor visits for various organs such as the eyes, ears, head issues, and back pain became very common after the rise of convenient phones. Even with fewer advantages, the early phone versions kept themselves and their users safe. Does it mean that fewer facilities cause less harm?
This is true not only for smartphones but also for most of the updated versions of life. Older weddings meant more days of togetherness than the newer ones. Older modes of transportation polluted the air less. Less usage of gadgets required fewer places for them to be made, causing less harm to water and air. Older houses with less comfort were stronger and held many more relationships together than today's concrete structures. Grandma’s hair oil led to less hair fall than the great haircare products available today. No wonder why people today are choosing to shift back to the less convenient lifestyle of the past. So does that mean we should opt for fewer updates? Should we adopt older lifestyles that provide more life? Is it true that more benefits lead to more harmful effects? Does less comfort offer more benefits? Should we stop using updated products? Should we shift to things that offer fewer benefits?
The problem is not with the updates. Updates offer more features and make our lives easier. It helps us to explore and discover new ideas. New techniques could be developed, and time spent could be reduced. While updates are beneficial, they come at a cost. We, the users, are the ones who determine how much we are willing to pay. The cost here is not the currency but the outcome. The more we want to use it, the higher the cost. If we can limit the usage, we will pay less. We could have reduced the negative effects of smartphones if we could limit their use. However, with more benefits, we find it difficult to control ourselves. We hardly want to stop. The first institution to which we were sent, known as school, imposed a number of restrictions on us. How many of us would show up on time if we were not required to enter school at a specific time?, which reminds us of places where we arrive late simply because there is no restriction. How many of us would stay inside the classroom for 6 hours if we weren't forced to do so? Is there a guarantee that everyone in a country will be safe if there are no rules?
Because with too much freedom and access, we tend to choose the wrong option. It is difficult for us to choose the right because we hardly want to stop or limit ourselves. The more freedom we have, the more inclined we are to misuse it. We are decreased access to more because it is impossible for us to limit more. Many these days prefer to go back to older lifestyles, or what we may call "restricted lifestyles", to avoid the harm caused by an unrestricted lifestyle. Either we restrict ourselves from misusing things or we are restricted from their maximum usage. Unless we are restricted, we don’t stop misusing it. Older methods seem to be better than the new updates because they had much limit than the newer versions. It was easier for us to stop using the older phones because there were fewer things to keep us occupied, but with more things to explore, it is difficult for us to reduce our use of smartphones. As too much sugar is not good for health and may cause more harm, overusing updates can also cause harm. The restrictions are not for our harm but are brought into effect in those places where it is difficult for us to choose the right without restriction. The benefits of discipline and self-control are best learned from a sportsperson. The ones who had denied themselves their favourite ice-cream and junk foods didn’t regret it later. The more discipline they practiced, the closer they came to victory.
This was the test put forward before our ancestors. When the first humans were given 1000 years to spend on the earth, they were tested as to what they would choose for 1000 years. Will they choose the right and deny the wrong? Or will they choose the wrong and deny the right? Choosing the right also meant restricting and limiting themselves from the harm that unlimited things would bring. Were they successful in passing the test?
A review of their lives was conducted at the 10th generation. Passing the test meant that the 1000-year long lifespan would be maintained. Failing is a loss. When people increased on the earth, they had a lack of restrictions. Their days were longer. When they were given free access, they wanted to choose everything they liked and desired. Selfishness made them do so. If they couldn’t get what they wanted, they took it by force. This led to jealousy, anger, quarrels, fights, and disputes in the initial stage. Everything we desire in our lives does not always benefit us. There was hardly anyone to stop them. Even though some warned them about the outcome, they ignored them because they knew they had been given around 1000 years to live and had no fear of wrongdoing.
The Earth is capable of accommodating a large number of people for a huge number of years, but what it cannot bear is a great amount of violence, bloodshed, and corruption. In the extreme stage, their actions resulted in an increase in evil and great wickedness, as they didn’t want to restrict themselves. Every opportunity was used to attack each other. They used all of their strength, wisdom, and long lives only to harm and wrong each other. Goodness was hardly found among them. With longer days, crime and corruption increased among the people. The more life they had, the less they used it for good purposes. With an unlimited life, they were unable to choose the right option. When our ancestors chose the unlimited lifestyle, they had no idea they were actually choosing a limited life.
The longer lifespan caused trouble for everyone. Therefore, the luxurious life of 1000s of years could not be sustained for much longer. A huge restriction awaited them because they chose an unrestricted lifestyle. The limit to their lives came in the form of the first flood, which exited them from planet Earth, except for one family that remained safe and used their long days to live in peace. The rainbow that appears in the clouds after every rain is a reminder of the first flood, which caused widespread devastation on Earth. When humans began to live again after the flood, they were limited. Only the first 10 generations of people before the flood could enjoy the blessing of long life, and they lived for approximately 900 – 1000 years. If they had passed the test, a lifespan of 1000 years would have continued, and today, we would also have lived for 1k years on earth. However, after the 10th generation, the lifespan began to decline. The next generations, from the 11th to the 20th, people could only live for 400–600 years. From the 20th to 30th generations, the average lifespan was 110–200 years. After that, people could hardly live beyond 100.
The average lifespan gradually decreased until it reached 70 or 80 years, and today, anyone living for 100 years is considered to have made a huge accomplishment. Not only were human days of life limited, but their strength, beauty, youthfulness, and wisdom all began to deteriorate after only a few decades on Earth. The decrease in lifespan also had an impact on the beginning of the next life. The biological clock at 40 indicates that 40 is the limit for the entry of the next generation. However, in those days, the next generations could enter the earth when their parents were around 500 years old. They were fortunate to meet at least 5-6 generations of people after them.
We, as humans, were not designed to live only 70–80 years, but our lifespan decreased as evil increased. It was only after certain generations that humans were given a fewer number of years to live on the earth. Because, with a longer life, humans used all those attributes for their own selfishness, as well as to harm and attack one another instead of for any betterment. From 900–1000 years, we have come down to living for only 70–80 years. Because when we choose an unlimited lifestyle, we actually lose our unlimited life. We cannot have both; either we choose an unlimited lifestyle and live a limited life, or we choose a limited lifestyle and live an unlimited life. Our 100-year limited lifespan is a result of an undisciplined and limitless lifestyle. We have been restricted because with unlimited life, we humans would have just created havoc and reached the limit of the earth quickly. Our mind is a wayward entity. As we gain more access or power, we use it to our advantage, even if it means harming others. To restrict harm or prevent earth from further destruction, the human lifespan was reduced.
Even a 1000-year life is not an eternity; it is also a limitation. Our ancestors have to stop living at 1000 and couldn’t go on. What led to their end? Why death? When did death begin? Were humans initially designed to die someday? If humans' average lifespan from the beginning was 80–100 years, then humans leaving the earth could have been a natural process or a pattern created by the Creator, but a decrease in lifespan from 1000 to 100 years tells us that there is some mystery that happened in the beginning that prevents humans from living forever. Does the entry of something bring a full stop to human life after a certain age? Just as there is a reason why we can't live past the age of 100, there is a reason why they can't live past the age of 1000 and must die. The upcoming blogs will undoubtedly clarify what happened in the distant past that resulted in the current human fate.
