ABSTRACT
Many think it’s impossible for parents and children to both get productive, quality sleep. Parents generally struggle to teach their kids to stay in bed, and likewise children have a difficult time learning to follow their parents’ instructions. This results in disturbed sleep for both. In fact, 51.7% of surveyed participants admit to having this problem. Our project, the Kiddie Light, is designed to solve this problem.
The Kiddie Light has two components: an easily accessible portable remote for parents, and the wall-mounted traffic light to hang in the child’s bedroom. Using radio frequency, the parental remote, with red, yellow and green buttons, connects to the red, yellow and green lights on the child’s traffic light. Throughout the night, the light in the child’s room is red. When the parent wakes up and is almost ready for the child to come out of bed, he/she pushes the yellow button. When he/she is ready, the parent pushes the green button, indicating the child can now come out of bed. When children see the simple, easy-to-understand traffic light in their room, they are eager to follow directions.
