February Edition 2018
Everyone is well aware that speed is a contributing factor to road accidents and often the greater the speed the more severe the injury. However it’s the reaction time and stopping distance which is of greater concern in residential areas where cars parked can hide a small child who can step out directly into traffic without warning.
Many Residents Groups have called upon the council to erect ‘Slow Down Children at Play’ signs or speed restricting road bumps.
Have you recently noticed the growing number of 30km/h signs being erected in local estates?
After a report (March 2015) looking into speed limits countrywide The Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport issued guidelines to reduce speed limits in residential areas from 50 km/h to 30 km/h.
November 2017 saw these 30 km/h speed limits come into force under the Road Traffic Special Speed Limits (Housing Estates ) County of Meath Bye-laws. We’ve seen a growing number of these signs being erected across the Navan Municipal District.
This map indicates over 40 Estates displaying the ‘30 km/h Slow Zone’ signage.

County Meath Joint Policing Committee support this initiative but not all estates have been 'Taken In Charge' by the council and so remain as private estates. However Residents Associations can enquire about inclusion in any future update to the 30 km/h Housing Estate Special Speed Limit Bye-Law by e-mail to Transport@meathcoco.ie
