August Edition 2017
We've all probably been for walks along the Ramparts Canal and possibly you've seen them fishing.
Formed in 2012 Navan Coarse Angling Club (NCAC) has around 40 active members and is open to all. They cater for all abilities with 7 trained coaches among their membership.
'We have members ranging in age from 6 to 60, those who are Navan born and Bred to more recent residents, members who are complete novice anglers to those would be seasoned match anglers."
Affiliated to Irish Angling Development Alliance (IADA) the Club welcomes all like-minded anglers who promote responsible fishing through catch and release, and a respect of the environment and public and private property.
"The club members will also offer you advice on where to fish locally since some areas such as the River Boyne and Blackwater in town which are controlled waters and not generally open to the public as such."
"There are still options within a half hour drive of Navan and indeed with in the environs of the town for those interesting in coarse fishing."
NCAC avail of fishing opportunities locally on the Boyne Canal and frequently go further afield joining up with other angling groups for friendlies and competitions.
The Club has its own development centre where children can learn the basics of this fantastic sport.
They have access to a safe and private small lake where they can introduce juniors to the skills of fishing.
All 7 coaches hold First For Sport Certificates in Coaching Angling.
The Club run outings throughout the year and also enter teams and individuals into both Junior and senior competitions.
However, if you’re not interested in competitions you’ve no need to worry since most of our members are pleasure anglers, fishing for relaxation rather than trophies and would be happy to have your company. You can contact us through our Facebook page or ask about us in local tackle shops.
Whilst you're at the Canal you'll see several insects, birds and animals from Mute Swans's, Otters, May Fly, Chaffinch and even Damsel Fly.
While the summer months usually produce the best sport we offer members the opportunity to fish all year around for a variety of species
Membership: Annual club fees for membership are €20 per adult and €5 per child or alternatively €20 covers one adult with children under 18.
Fishing can be as cheap or as expensive as you wish to make it and a €50 investment will get you a basic starter kit but it is advisable to talk to a club member before buying anything as their free advice is invaluable.
The Club can provide equipment for small groups of up to 6 children for a training session. Basic kit: Rod, Reel, Landing Net, Hooks, Line, Float and shots.
1. The full restoration of in circa one kilometre of the Boyne Canal at the Ramparts in Navan which theretofore had been unnavigable and unfishable for in excess of 40 years, and had become completely overgrown, strewn with fallen trees and a dumping ground for shopping trolleys and such like. This effort saw members of NCAC volunteer their time and efforts at weekends and complete the manually demanding work in conjunction with Inland Waterways Association of Ireland (“IWAI”) under appropriate state licences.
2. The setting up of Navan Youth Angling Development Centre. Here we can provide equipment and coaching sessions by qualified coaches for groups of up to 6 children in a safe and friendly environment on the doorstep of Navan Town.
