The first Jade Guild Bazaar was held on April 16, 1967, at Chong Wa Hall. A chow mein luncheon and baked goods were sold, as well as offerings of handicrafts, games and a raffle. Our Chinese pastries quickly sold out – this was years before local restaurants served dim sum in Seattle. One faithful customer drove all the way from Portland every year just to buy Nellie Woo’s ‘tei doi’!
For many years, The Jade Guild raised funds to donate to many community agencies such as The Seattle Chinese Girls Drill Team, Chong Wa Chinese School, International District Emergency Center, Wing Luke Asian Museum’s Oral History Program, scholarships for students’ education, and Seattle Chinese Boy Scout Troop 254. Funds were raised through bazaars, Moon Festival booths, Entertainment Book sales, spaghetti feeds, rummage sales, inventorying at the Bon Marche, Dessert Dashes, and many other varying activities.
The Jade Guild has also contributed to the Asian community in other ways such as volunteering at Kin On Health Care Center and supporting Asian Counseling and Referral Service’s annual Walk for Rice fundraiser by providing donations and baked goods for the participants. Since 1983, the Guild has held Bingo Games every year for the elderly residents at the International House in Chinatown. The residents always look forward to this event as we would bring many prizes and our famous refreshments. The Jade Guild continues to support the Greater Seattle Chinese Chamber of Commerce - Miss Chinese Seattle Scholarship Pageant by helping the contestants change into their various outfits for their different performances. Additionally, we continue to craft handmade cards and chopstick covers for Kin On Health Care Center and Kawabe Memorial House each year.
In 2003, The Jade Guild was recognized by The Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA) Greater Seattle Chapter and received The Golden Circle Award in appreciation for a lifelong contribution to the Chinese American community and its heritage. Jade Guild also received the Bertha and Herb Tsuchiya Volunteer Award from Kin On Health Care Center in 2011 and in 2013, we received recognition from the Greater Seattle Chinese Chamber of Commerce in appreciation for many years of helping at the Miss Chinese Seattle Scholarship Pageants.
The Jade Guild has offered many educational events for its members such as Chinese cooking lessons, health and travel education, home and personal safety tips, introduction to Facebook, crafting techniques and field trips throughout the Seattle/Tacoma area.
Currently, there are 64 Jade Guild Members. We continue to enjoy socializing, sharing and learning, while supporting our community. As we reflect on and celebrate the past 50 Years, we look forward to many more years of being a vital part of the Chinese and Asian Communities!
