Let's do some Math

Why math?

In DSU4103 we will occasionally deal with some mathematics. The following is an example from the lecture notes.

Knowing that students every year have very diverse mathematics background, it would be helpful to review some of these basic math skills in this preparatory class.

What types of math?

The math skills required are simple algebraic skills. The following pages from Khan Academy are helpful:

  1. Solving equations with variables on both sides

  2. Laws of exponents (also see some formulas here: Laws of Exponents)

    1. Multiplying & dividing powers (integer exponents)

    2. Powers of products & quotients (integer exponents)

    3. Rational exponents

  3. Logarithms (also see Working with Exponents and Logarithms)

We will go through some exercise problems in this preparatory class as a revision.

How to pick up these math skills effectively?

  1. Understand the formulas. Don't rote learn.

  2. Do a lot of practice by yourself, rather than just watching others.

  3. Do it by writing, not by typing.

I will guide you through all these during the semester.
