We aim to create a change in Canada's connection to its Indigenous culture.
Bringing Indigenous Art to Toronto
Inspiration:
During a summer stroll through Toronto's Hippie Market, the absence of Indigenous art sparked a realization. Growing up in Mexico, I witnessed the vibrant presence of Indigenous artisans in markets and bazaars. This stark contrast fueled a desire to showcase Indigenous art in Toronto, not just for its beauty, but also for its potential to connect Canadian youth with Indigenous culture – a crucial step towards reconciliation.
Mission:
The Indigenous Arts Collective aims to bridge the gap by providing a platform for Indigenous artists to share their work at Toronto's vibrant markets. Inspired by the bustling Mexican markets of my childhood, we envision a space where art, business, and cultural awareness intertwine.
How We Work:
As a non-profit initiative, we connect with Indigenous artists who wish to participate. We assist with organizing, promoting, and selling their art at markets, ensuring all proceeds go directly to them. To cover market fees, we gratefully accept donations, which directly support our mission.
Artists' Role:
We invite Indigenous artists to join us in this endeavor by providing their creations. To enrich the experience, we encourage artists to attach a brief personal statement or message to each piece, fostering understanding and appreciation of Indigenous history, culture, and stories.
Join the Movement:
Donate to The Indigenous Arts Collective and help us rent tables at markets, amplifying Indigenous voices and fostering cultural connection. Every contribution, big or small, makes a difference.
