What is a

Math Trail?

MathTalk PBC is an organization with four decades of teaching math in public schools located in economically distressed neighborhoods across America. Their mission: Enjoy Math Everywhere! marries well with Clayton County's mission: To empower scholars to achieve academic, professional, and personal goals by providing equitable access and experiences that build skills in literacy, creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration. MathTalk creates unique opportunities for young children and their families, particularly those in economically distressed communities, to discover and enjoy math anywhere, exposing them to more opportunities to become mathematically literate, creative, critical thinkers.

MathTalk installations are embedded in everyday environments and spark playful opportunities for open-ended math exploration and conversation. They are designed and located in places that provide natural opportunities for children and families to engage with math content across ages and levels in ways that build kid's and adult's interest, confidence, and enthusiasm for math. MathTalk “HotSpots” are a combination of math inspired art installations, signage, and a digital experience. These installations can be installed in various locations such as playgrounds, walking paths, gardens or any available space that allows for interaction.

An example as shown in the image below is the Random Walk Game. This installation can be placed near a walking path or in a park to allow adults and children to play the game as explained in the signage and prompts provided or they can create their own games. To enhance their experience, families are able to utilize the free MathTalk Measure! Everything! Augmented reality app to place animated objects into the environment and engage with digital adventures.
