Block 2 entered its second exploration phase in March 2026. The exploratory well Asopos-1 is currently scheduled for February 2027, subject to the completion of the required regulatory approvals. The artwork was created approximately 10 kilometres from the nearest boundary of the Block 2 offshore concession.
PROJECT SUMMARY
The Hunt is a temporary 500-square-metre land art installation created by visual artist The Krank on Aspri Ammos Beach, on the island of Othonoi, the westernmost inhabited point of Greece.
The artwork was installed approximately 10 kilometres from the nearest boundary of the Block 2 in the northern Ionian Sea, where offshore hydrocarbon drilling is planned. Rather than using the landscape merely as a backdrop, the project was created within the actual geographical area facing the possibility of environmental and industrial transformation.
Inspired by prehistoric cave paintings, the installation depicts two hunters confronting the silhouette of a contemporary offshore oil platform. The image brings together two moments separated by thousands of years, connecting humanity’s earliest struggle for survival with present-day systems of resource extraction.
Created using black geotextile placed temporarily on the beach, the work was fully removed after its photographic and video documentation, leaving no permanent alteration to the nature.
By placing the image directly within the landscape connected to the proposed activities, The Hunt transforms the site into a space for public reflection on energy, extraction and humanity’s changing relationship with the natural environment.

LOCATION
The installation was created on Aspri Ammos beach on Othonoi, Greece's westernmost inhabited island. The site faces Block 2 in the northwestern Ionian Sea, an offshore exploration concession. The artwork is located approximately 10 kilometres from the concession area.

WHY THIS MATTERS
Environmental debates surrounding offshore drilling are often communicated through technical language, maps, permits and policy documents. The Hunt approaches the issue through a single, immediate image situated within the landscape where the proposed activities may take place.
The artwork makes a geographically distant or abstract industrial project visible within the everyday experience of the island. It connects the scale of contemporary extraction with a much longer history of human survival, conquest and dependence on natural resources.
During the installation, visitors initially expressed concern about the unfamiliar black material placed on the beach. Once the temporary nature of the artwork and its relationship to Block 2 were explained, their attention shifted from the installation towards the horizon and the planned drilling area.
This movement of attention is central to the project. The work does not attempt to replace scientific, environmental or political analysis. Instead, it offers environmental organisations a visual point of entry: an image capable of opening discussion, making the location tangible and encouraging audiences to look again at a landscape before it is potentially transformed.
The Hunt can support non-commercial environmental communication, educational initiatives, public-awareness campaigns and editorial discussions concerning offshore drilling, fossil-fuel extraction and the future of the Ionian landscape.
