The Wasserburg

The "Wasserburg" or "Water Castle" in Roßlau was built on the ruins of a Slavic castle in the 12th century. Situated near the river Elbe it was surrounded by three moats. By the 14th century it was the seat of the prince of Anhalt til the 17th century, when he moved to the castle in Zerbst. By the 19th century ownership fell into the hands of the duke of Köthen who repurposed it into a forest warden's lodge. The castle burned down in 1870 and was restored during the 1920s. Today the grounds are used for numerous festivals and markets.
