Fort la Latte

Fort la Latte is an impressive fortress built on the cliff of the bay of Fresnaye, part of the Côte d'Armor in the north of Brittany.

The now present castle is from the XIV century, but a stronghold to guard against attacks has existed there since the X century. The building is also known as the "Château de la Goyon", the family name of the first proprietors. More specifically, a legend sais that it was built during the rain of Alan II, duke of Brittany 'til 952 AD, nicknamed Wrybeard or Twistedbeard.

As happened to most castles, this one burned down, due to the attacks of the Catholic League, during the religious wars in the XVI century. It was later restored, between 1690 and 1715, by Jean-Siméon Garangeau, a military engineer from Saint Malo. With the addition of canons it was used to defend Saint Malo from the attacks of the British and Dutch.

It was abandoned for most of the XIX century but became private property in 1892.

Today it is a tourist attraction and one of the most impressive castles on the cost of Brittany.
