Blood Moon

The photographic documentation of the bloody lunar eclipse from start to finish

Time spent on this project: 3 days of Lightroom and 66 Photoshop layers.

The first row up top depicts my first sighting of the blood moon as the clouds lifted, the second row the climax of the moon in its full bloodiness.

Now the other 12 moons, that's where it gets interesting. They show how, towards the end of the eclipse, the sunlight started to shine back onto the moon more and more from left to right. The column on the right could be called the most "realistic" from our perception's point of view. The column on the left depicts the detail of the moon that our eyes couldn't decrypt because they were overwhelmed by the amount of light flooding in.

The middle column is my favourite. It's a sort of HDR, merging the moon slices of the columns left and right to encapsulate the most detail and emphasise the moon's altered pigmentation.
