The Heron Half Marathon takes runners on a scenic road course through rolling countryside, combining long steady stretches with a few gentle rises. The route is predominantly flat with a total elevation gain of around 171 ft, making it ideal for first-time half marathoners and seasoned racers chasing PBs.
The race begins at the athletics track at RNAS Yeovilton, before joining the main road. This wide open section is perfect for finding your pace, and settling in early before you turn off toward the village roads.
The course then takes you through quieter rural lanes between Bridghampton and Chilton. This section is mostly flat, with some gentle rises. This section is scenic with fields and hedgerows lining the route.
Around mile 10 you’ll encounter the West Camel Climb, it is a short but noticeable climb, then a downhill finish once you crest the hill. It’s a great spot for spectators access and cheer runners on!
Following the climb, you’ll enjoy a flat section along the B3151 and then through Podimore once more. These stretches are flat and fast, and an ideal spot for spectators to catch you at multiple points in the race, and still see you at the finish.
