A community led organization dedicated to the restoration of the Hansen dam lake
In September 1940 work was completed on a new dam in Los Angeles that would connect the Tujunga river wash to the Los Angeles river. This dam would provide desperately needed flood control for the flash flood prone San Fernando valley . The dam would stand at 30 meters or 100 ft in height and span over a mile in length. The dam would become the largest dam in the San Fernando valley and the longest dam in California. The lake contained a plethora of wildlife including Rainbow trout, Catfish , Largemouth bass, Carp and bluegill. In the 1950s and through the 70s , the lake was an extremely popular local swimming spot. The lake offered water skis, boating, fishing , swimming or simply just a beachy spot to tan. Hansen lake acted as a mini beach like destination right in local residents own backyard. The lake helped aid the local economy by raising property values and drew countless young families to the area.
However, since the 1970s Hansen dam has been neglected and left to dry and decay by private companies and the US air force, its runoffs and aqueduct have been clogged by decades of debris and trash. Thousands of fish have died due to the lake drying up. Local species have been forced to relocated themselves due to lack of a water source. Countless families have left and the local economy has nearly collapsed. The loss of the lake has crippled the area and destroyed an iconic part of the valleys history.
We demand something be done. With the communities help we can pressure the city of Los angles into taking action.
WE can restore Hansen Lake and repair our community!
Above: Countless deceased fish line the inner most areas
of the park where the water used to be several feet deep.
A clear repercussion of years of the lake's neglect.
Above: How the dam looks from its base in 2025, in the 1950s this area of the lake was nearly 96 inches deep.
The massive scale of the 100 ft dam is cleary visible from angles like this.
Locals can be seen enjoying the many amenities it provided
