Each member must document a minimum of twenty-four (24) hours of school/community volunteer hours in the allotted time each semester by completing at least 12 chapter hours and 12 individual hours and must submit the documentation to the Faculty Advisor(s) within fourteen (14) calendar days of the volunteer date. Individual hours MUST be completed outside the school day.
Chapter service hours are acquired by the Chapter’s designated service areas which include, but are not limited to, volunteering at the nursing homes, elementary or middle schools to be determined or at Garland High School. All members are required to participate in all projects sponsored by the GHS-NHS. These activated include, but are not limited to, GHS Blood Drive, GHS Owl Show, Canstruction.
Individual service hours are arranged and acquired by the member. Individual hours should be activities which get you out of the school and into the community. NHS already provides some volunteer activities that benefit the school so you should go beyond the school, your family, and your church to serve others. Activities not accepted include: work done for your relatives, donating items {except for NHS-sponsored projects}, babysitting other than for a service organization, political campaigning, any religion-based/church-related activity other than outreach (away from the church, not for church profit) or for any for-profit organization/business. Check with the Faculty Advisors if in doubt.
Remember Chapter Hours roll into Individual Hours, not the other way around. Hours don't roll over into the next semester.
