Dr. Xiaoyu Gao is an assistant professor at Baylor University, Department of Environmental Science. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Chemistry at Nanjing University in 2014. He pursued his Ph.D. degree under the supervision of Prof. Greg V. Lowry and Prof. Elizabeth A. Casman at Carnegie Mellon University Civil and Environmental Engineering in 2019. He then worked as a postdoctoral researcher at McGill University with Prof. Subhasis Ghoshal, where he started working with PhD and MS students closely on independent research projects. Dr. Gao is an associate editor for the journal 'Frontiers in Nanotechnology'.
Dr. Gao’s work has focused on two areas. The first area is tracking the fate, transport, and bioavailability of emerging contaminants in complex environmental media, such as engineered nanomaterials and microplastics. The second research focus is designing engineered nanomaterials for sustainable agriculture and environmental remediation. Dr. Gao’s work has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as Nature Nanotechnology, ACS Nano, Environmental Science & Technology, Journal of Hazardous & Materials, etc. His publications have an H-index of 13 with over a thousand citations.
Aishwarya Bhattacharya is a PhD student in Dr. Gao's lab in Baylor University's Environmental Science Department. She completed my M.Tech. in Hydrology from Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, India in 2024. Her previous educational background was an M.Sc. in Applied Geology from University of Calcutta, India. Her M.Tech. dissertation was focused on the fate and transport of heavy metals in hard rock aquifers, earning her the Best Poster Presentation Award at an International World Water Day Event at IIT Roorkee 2024. Aishwarya will work on developing multi-functional agrochemicals for plant crops in Dr. Gao's lab. Beyond academics, Aishwarya is passionate about painting and music, having secured many top 3 positions in several painting competitions across India.
My name is Anh Le, and I am an undergraduate student majoring in Biology with a concentration in Cell and Molecular Biology. My research interests focus on agriculture and the application of nanomaterials in crop improvement, salinization management, and environmental sustainability.
In my free time, I enjoy working with animals, spending time with friends, and exploring nature through walks.
I am a postdoctoral researcher in Dr. Gao’s Lab with a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from Peking University. I previously held postdoctoral positions at the University of Washington (2021–2023) and McGill University (2023–2025). My research focuses on drinking water safety, pollution remediation, and emerging contaminants, leveraging advanced spectroscopic and mass spectrometric approaches to investigate dissolved organic matter, disinfection by-products, heavy metals, and PFAS. To date, I have authored 18 publications in leading journals, including Nature Communications, Environmental Science & Technology, and Water Research.
