Join us for a benefit performance Wed, May 27th!
Join us for a special benefit performance of CATERPILLAR SOUP, a one-person performance about transformation, queerness, and love.
Presented by Historically Close Friends (a program of queer theater company Between The Willows) to benefit the rent fund for our studio space in downtown Burlington. Stick around after the show for an anti-capitalist auction!
Below are descriptions of The Furnace's regular programs. Specific dates and details are announced on our Instagram and in our Signal group. Located at our studio in downtown Burlington, on the 3rd floor at 113 Church Street (above Leunig's), unless otherwise noted. All programs are offered by donation. No one turned away for lack of funds!
Our offerings are based in an ethos of radical respect, open communication, and generosity.
COLD READ CLUB — A book club for plays, minus the reading homework. We focus on new, wild, liberatory plays that challenge conventional notions of what a play can be and inspire us to reimagine. Show up to read a role or just to listen! No advance reading necessary. We recommend bringing a device you can use to read a PDF of the play. (Days vary. Led by Gina.)
TEXT DEVELOPMENT JAM — Bring excerpts, full plays or just an idea. Come write, read and hang out with other playwrights in a low-stakes environment where you can ask for feedback or just have a dedicated time to write. Playwriting experience NOT required! (First Thursdays. Led by Harley.)
RECESS — Evolve your practice of play! These all-levels, drop-in theater training sessions provide a space to play and practice together outside the rehearsal room. Expect games, warm-ups, theater-making exercises, and more. Good art takes practice, but most of all it rewards play! No skills or experience required. (Check back for future dates. Led by Quinn.)
PREVIOUS OFFERINGS — Other past (and future!) offerings have included: an audition lab, theater community gatherings, collaborator speed dating, and more. Also see Past Projects below.
Have more questions about what to expect? Have a suggestion for our programming? Send us a message — we'd love to talk!
Specific dates and details are announced on our Instagram (below) and in our Signal group.

There was a fire, long ago, though no one in this small town talks about it. But when a stranger arrives looking for answers about their father, the town must confront a haunted past — and decide what that means for the future. All the while, the ensemble of actors telling the story tries to figure out: how should it all end?
Full of whimsy and physical storytelling, An Otherwise Lovely Residential Area is a devised play about love, ghosts, and the revolutionary power of imagination.

Performances were at the Off Center for the Performing Arts on June 28th and 29th, 2025.
