#34. The Rise and Fall of Pencil. (BFDI 1-19)
If you thought that Pin's downfall was humiliating, just wait until you hear about Pencil. This contestant not only had power from the beginning, she managed to hold it until the very end. But just as she was reaching her height of power, she slowly began to fall off. And the greatest front runner for the season soon found herself into hot water, leading to her eventual elimination.
The fallen King
This honestly was one of the most legendary story arcs the entire show ever produced, who knew that Pencil would become the front runner, the leader, the one everyone wanted to stop. She was unstoppable but a few simple mistakes lead to a demise she couldn't have seen coming. But suffice it to say, this was such a entertaining piece to watch. We got to see.
Pencil rise to power.
Pencil gets cocky on her power.
Pencil notice she was losing her control.
Pencil scramble for safety.
Pencil gets eliminated.
During the first ever challenge in the show, Pencil, Bubble, and Match form an idea. They will create an alliance which will run the game, they will have lots of control over the challenges and they can steamroll their way to the end. Or so it seems... because instantly after the alliance is created, it hits its first problem.
"Lets form an alliance"
"That should be no harm"
"Lets do it!"
"What? An alliance? I've got to join!
Ice Cube decides to join the alliance
And immediatley after her request, he screws them all up and causes them to lose the challenge
"No"
This is where Pencil makes her next mistake. Because she kicked out Ice Cube, this might seem like its not a bad thing since Ice Cube sucks at challenges, and she doesn't have much to contribute at all. It seems like a perfectly normal decision.
Starves to death in grocery stores
Thanks to that little mistake. In very subtle ways, Ice Cube is about to destroy her chances at getting into the game. Without even realizing it, she just doomed the alliance with one little phrase.
"Thanks for picking me, Pencil wouldn't let me into her alliance"
That's right Ice Cube, expose a secret alliance and make the people who are deciding the teams. Its not that surprising considering how bad she is at the game. But this one mistake set the alliance bakwards and even continued to screw them over in the later episodes. Because the next thing that happens is Pin comes in to break up the alliance.
"Then, I choose Pencil"
Oh shoot, now we have Ice Cube and Pencil seperated, no chance at redemption and one more number into the group. Well, don't worry, Bubble and Match aren't known to be in the alliance yet. She can still get them if nothing goes wrong.
"Say Bubble"
"Bubble"
"Yeah!"
Pencil adds the next person into the alliance, which is Match.
The trio is now complete, now without that nagging issue of Ice Cube, the alliance can now run the game from the Cherry side. They already have overthrown Pin an her team. They now have all the control in the red team. And they begin to pick team members who are going to add to their demise. Instead of choosing contestants that will argue a lot and ones that will let the alliance slip right through. Instead they choose some of the most likable agreeable people in the show.
"Pen, guys?"
"Firey! Get over here!"
On top of that, they let Pin have control over the next person she can add to her team.
"Eraser is the least horrible I guess"
"Blocky, our friend"
And this is why you don't give Pin control, thanks to her, now you have two groups of 3 that are going to be constantly fighting for the rest of the time. That will certainly make the alliance look worse. Thus concluding Act 1, it seems like the alliance is in a decent position, but not anywhere good.
Under the leadership of Pin, the Squishy cherries fall into a massive losing streak. And soon the contestants will start to be voted off. Now you would think that the alliance would be under pressure for their constant arguments with the guys group. That is what would be expected, except the audience has some other people they dislike more than the alliance.
Bliiiiiiindside
Spongy is voted out, and only Match gets a vote from the viewers, things seem to be going great.
In episode 3, Pencil and Match start getting cocky about how liked they are. And immediatley turn around so they can bully Bubble; their own alliance mate.
Match kills Bubble
Then Match and Pencil start to go a little further with their insults.
"Bubble is so dumb she can't even count to three"
Match and Pencil are so satisfied with their insults, they are being so cruel to poor Bubble, and surely Match or Pencil will be voted out next.
Actually nope, because right during that episode, Blocky cheated on the test, making him the target.
Bliiiiiiindside
Oh great, Pencil and Match get to move on. But they are surely being targeted since they have been getting increasingly rude with Bubble and will continue to keep picking on her. This is going to turn around on her soon. But surely now they will be in trouble, right?
Bliiiiiiindside
Oh that's right, everyone hated Woody, he was eliminated with a record of 9 votes.
Oh okay, so they finally learned from their mistakes and are trying to make amends. Of course they do it in the most insulting way possible.
"Good luck, not-dumb friend"
"I'm in an alliance, we have to stick together"
Things are bound to get a bit worse, but Pencil doesn't feel like she has to worry as much as Match, after all, Match has been voted for three times, Pencil hasn't gotten a vote yet. So why should she care? Oh well, I guess she still did give an attempt.
"Bubble, Gotcha"
Will this still be enough to make up for what she did? Or will the viewers see it as fake and try to eliminate her?
Nope.
Bliiiiiiindside
The alliance managed to survive four straight Cake at Stakes and with only a few votes to share between them,
Pencil got out with no votes cast for her.
Bubble got out with one vote for her
Match on the other hand got four votes, but only one each episode.
Debatably the alliance is still in a great position. The next person to go will either be Pen or Eraser as they aren't as liked as the alliance. Things are going great, the alliance is untouchable. Or so Pencil thinks. Things are slowly starting to get worse. Because now Firey has left the team to join the Squashy grapes. The poor Squishy Cherries are now left to a measley five team members left.
Bliiiiiiindside
Now the Squishy Cherries are down to only five members. Some of the fan favourites are on this team and its getting uncomfortably close to end of the Cherries. They will soon be decimated until there are none left. At this rate there will only be 2 or 3 cherries left once the merge happens. Thankfully Eraser and Pen are up next to be eliminated.
But the end is arriving soon, there are only five Cherries left compared to a goliath team of 9. The unstoppable Grapes managed to retrieve their numbers and aren't slowing down. Something drastic has to happen in order to save our little hero Cherries.
Doomed
Now the Cherries are really in some deep trouble, they have a huge loss and they aren't getting along anymore. Eraser and Pen against the alliance is becoming a real thing. The divide keeps growing as there is not a "Its either you or me" attitude growing around the team.
Finger pointing and sabotage becomes a prevelant thing in the next episodes.
"You worry too much, Pencil"
"Yeah, it was like so funny, Eraser just walked up and stepped on a nail"
"Hoy hoy"
"You two better not be talking about me"
"And why aren't you helping us on the puzzle?"
"Oh great, now you're bossy"
"I was glad when Pin was like eliminated"
"But now you're like her"
"I have to carry Match, and I know she's gaining weight"
*slap*
"Thanks a lot, Bubble, it's your fault we lost"
The team is clearly falling apart, they need a miracle to save themselves, or else it seems like the end of the road for the little flimsy team of five.
If things couldn't go worse for our little gang of plucky Cherries. Something is about to bring wrath to them, for beyond the horizon, a speaker of doom is about to rise again.
Yes, its from over there
Because the Announcer pulls out the biggest threat to their game possible.
It all starts when the Cherries blow the next challenge.
The pointer
And the announcer drops a bombshell.
"Would you like to know your reward?"
"Yeah!"
"You win an eliminated contestant back on to your team"
"Do we get to choose which contestant?"
"Nope"
Now the tides of the game will completley shift again.
We now have 6 contestants who are going to rejoin the game.
- Six of them are very bitter.
- Four of them are former Squishy Cherries.
- Two of them are actively planning to get revenge.
- One of them has connections with Eraser and Pen.
The Squishy Cherries will now be outnumbered 2:1. The Squashy Grapes have dominated the premerge so much, they will not officially have double the contestants as the Cherries. Things could not look worse for the Cherries. Someone from the eliminated contestants is going to be back, and they're going to be back for one thing.
"Revenge!"
Yes, Ice Cube, Revenge.
(Wow, for once Ice Cube got something right)
Back to the point, someone is joining at this very moment? Who will it be?
Not Woody
Not Pin
Not Spongy
Not Flower
Sorry, Flower, try making death threats next time, maybe it will work out that time.
Announcer: Its down to Needy.
*slap*
Needle: Don't call me Needy!
Announcer: And Blocky, the stabber and the stabbable.
*slap*
Blocky: Don't call me stabbable!
Announcer: Blocky rejoins
Now that Blocky has rejoined, he will be joining the Squashy Grapes. He is very happy about this because it means he will forge some new bonds and more importantly. He can begin his revenge plan on the alliance. Currently, there are only two contestants on the Grapes are hostile to the Cherries right now; Blocky and Ice Cube.
But that is going to change soon.
Ice Cube has intergrated herself with the Grape Girls
Blocky is friends with Snowball
Who is friends with Coiny
And everyone just hates Golf Ball
However, something is about to happen that will change the game for Pencil and her alliance. Something that will fundamentally shift the power in the show permenantly. Giving the alliance the upper hand.
The alliance is still doomed... they just don't know it yet...
Finally a breath of fresh air. The Cherry five are graced with a second twist that would save their lives.
"You will split into 2 teams of 5"
"Leafy and Rocky will pick the teams"
"Aha, Ice Cube, come on down, you can be in my ally"
"Thanks for picking me, Pencil wouldn't let me into her alliance"
"That was almost a year ago, Icy. Let it go"
Ice Cube has already begun forging more bitterness to the Cherry five. And it doesn't stop there.
Pencil knows that this is going to screw her over down the road, she will now have to look to different allies.
Her teammates, Eraser and Pen
Since Blocky has now pledged allegiance to Snowball.
Thankfully, Eraser and Pen also realize that they are up against the world, and soon begin to work well with the alliance instead of breaking up and fighting.
The Cherries finally decide to get along for once and walk to an easy victory in the next challenge.
"Yoy"
*boop*
Now be aware that this cherry-alliance is fragile. Snowball and Blocky are on the team right next to them on the other team. The threat of those four aligning is still very real. But for now, the cherries are going to be on easy street. Of course, without knowing that some issues are brewing underneath the surface.
But as time goes on...
"Yay!"
The Cherries win...
And win...
"Yeah!"
This is great for Pencil and her alliance. Her team unity has never been so good. She is now on a confident path to victory. That is, if there weren't some major mistakes she makes here.
The first one comes at the tail end of the Cherries first victory.
"You must now choose one player onto your team"
"I want Snowball on my team, he is just AWESOME"
"Well Snowball's not so smart, so I'll pick Teardrop"
"OMG, I totally like agree, SB is a total jerk"
"No, I think SB is, is awesome!"
Uh oh, now we have our first instance of the team being divided again.
And Pencil is here to break the tie, and she is forced to make a decision that will surely screw her down the line and she knows it, trying the hardest to make the best assessment of who would work best on her team. Eventually its time for her to pick.
"So its all down to me?"
"Well, Snowball won contests four and five so I pick him"
Now on the surface, this seems like a good idea. Snowball has a lot of unique assets that can secretly benefit Pencil down the road including;
Snowball is great at challenges
Pencil can ensure that there is a bigger target on her team instead of herself
Pencil can appease Eraser and Pen and strengthen the alliance
Teardrop is a fan favourite, one less person to worry about
This all seems good to go right?
"Yeah!"
Well you would be wrong, very wrong.
"How wrong? Like moderately wrong or-"
Like super super wow wow over the top extremley wrong.
Choosing Teardrop was actually the superior option because.
The alliance can enlist Teardrop into the alliance instead of making the team possibly divide 3-3.
Letting Snowball stay could seperate the team and break the flimsy Pencil-Match-Bubble-Eraser-Pen alliance.
Snowball is the second biggest threat to tearing apart the Cherry five.
The merge is coming soon, and Snowball will be a major threat.
"OMG seriously?"
Yeah, you might have just royally screwed yourself over, Pencil. You won't realize it yet, but soon enough you will realize how much in danger you are.
But later in the next episode, problems don't become any more aparrent as the Cherry 6 eliminate Golf Ball. All seems to be smooth sailing for now.
Then in episode eleven. There becomes an emergence of the three people that are going to tear apart this alliance.
The squashy grapes
Remember how I said Pencil not picking Ice Cube was the mistake that doomed her? Well it starts here.
Leafy is already so protective of Ice Cube and won't let her out of her sight. Ice Cube is no longer loyal to Pencil anymore and instead is with Leafy for the long haul. Also on the team is Blocky. Someone who is solely there for revenge. These three would end up destroying Pencil's game right to the bone.
"Death to the alliance"
Because the first thing that happens in episode 11 is Leafy and Blocky target the Cherries for their threat level.
Despite the much smarter choice of targeting the Names for their disadvantage. As long as they don't lose they are all safe.
But Leafy points out that they are now going to target the Cherries.
"Hey guys, lets go for the Cherries"
"With seven members, they're a bigger threat"
And soon enough they are both targeting each other.
"YAH"
"Ehhh"
Stalemate
Eventually Leafy and Blocky gain the upper hand using their teeth to finish the job. The Cherries fall one by one thanks to them.
And Snowball.
As for right now, the three grapes seem like little road blocks into Pencil's road to victory. She is still in a safe position, with 2 loyal allies, 2 close allies and 2 stragglers on her team. Everything seems fine. She will have protection in numbers and people less likable than her.
All of this hard working would finally pay off in the merge.
The merge finally hits the final 12 of BFDI, everything seems to be in perfect place for Pencil and her Alliance to make it to the end. This is where we get an interesting development. People started rejoining their former groups and suddenly the communication broke down. Eraser and Pen were no longer interested in talking to the Alliance. They rejoined with Blocky and Snowball. Pencil couldn't talk to Ice Cube because Leafy was being overprotective.
Parasite finds a new host
Then we get to the introduction of points. And most importatnly, the get a vote, lose a point twist. And it revealed an important deatil for Pencil.
"Pencil, as you may know, you are the only one here who has never gotten a vote"
"Yeah!"
This does two things for Pencil.
The first thing is it tells her the false truth that she is the most likable person left on the show. Making her a lot more egotistical.
The second things that happened to Pencil is now there is a huge bounty on her head.
Now Pencil is in hot water, since she is most likely not the fan favourite anymore since episode 6. In that time she has gotten a lot more rude thanks to her ego. Pencil thinks that she is invincible. And of course, now without worry for her social game. She can start being ruder, and less agreeable.
Things are still in a decent place, only Bubble is in danger of being eliminated. That is why she decided to keep Snowball and Rocky around, for the explicit purpose of having a voting shield.
"Snowball, you have been eliminated"
Now the alliance has made it to the final 11. This is where Blocky starts to sabotage the alliance.
"Revenge, baby!"
The first thing he does is he gets his former friends back, as soon as it happened, Eraser and Pen are no longer on speaking terms with the alliance. Disappointingly, this great possible five way alliance could have had complete control of the game. But now are just crumbling at the seams. There will be no Cherry alliance.
The guys group reunited
Soon enough, the sides are completley split again. Eraser and Pen are back in the hands of Blocky and soon enough they are targeting each other.
"Hiya"
"I got myself a ball, (and one away from Bubble) now what?"
This merge is already going poorly, the tight bond that the Cherry five thought they had has already evaporated the instant they got to the merge. Pencil soon turns her attention to Ice Cube, but she refuses to join, since she is now loyal to Leafy. But thanks to a sabotage of Leafy. Ice Cube is ready to switch sides.
"Icy I am so sorry"
"I want revenge"
It seems like there is a silver lining, they may have lost contact with the guys, but there is someone else ready to join the alliance. Only if there is enough time, Match is up for elimination, and the situation is seeming dire.
Match is now up for elimination, this has two possible exits. Either she survives and makes it to the end, with her alliance shield. Or she is eliminated.
One by one
Some people get safe
Until its down to Match and Rocky
The votes go up...
And Match is eliminated
Oh no, The alliance just lost its first member. This will be the first blow to their strength in the game.
"No, Match, no! You've been eliminated"
"OMG, I know its so like hard, but you've got to keep like like going!"
"You have to win this for like like like like the both of us"
And just like that, the alliance has diminished to two measley members. Eraser and Pen are nowhere to be seen, and they just lost a core member in Match. Thankfully there is a silver lining waiting for them.
"Hey guys, can I be part of your alliance?"
"You know what? Sure, you can be a part of our alliance!"
"The more friends the better right?"
And now just as fast as the Cherry five broke apart. The new alliance has formed. They will be able to survive for the next few rounds helping protect each other (And especially Pencil)
At this point, Pencil's ego is growing, she is actively believing that everyone is rooting for her sucess in the game, and she is getting drunk on her power. Soon she is going to take this too far and put herself in to some deep trouble. Lets see what she does from this point onwards.
Moans in disgust when Spongy returns
Insults the soul out of Ice Cube
Destroy everyone in the barf bag challenge
Kills Bubble
Yells at Firey to hurry up
Kills Ice Cube
Pisses off everyone outside of her alliance
In the barf bag challenge, Blocky once again tries to sabotage the alliance with a bowling ball.
"Hiya"
Pencil: Wheeee
Then the bowling challenge happens, Pencil does okay.
"Yeah!"
*crash*
*kerplunk*
*ding*
And she does manage to help her alliance, but it comes at the cost of everyone else. Soon enough everyone is very mad at her. And as a method of sweet revenge, Blocky targets Bubble.
Down to zero
Then Blocky attacks Pencil for targeting him
This doesn't affect Pencil as much as Bubble and Ice Cube, managing to slide into a safe 3rd place on the scoreboard. But just as she thinks she is safe, the Announcer pulls out a special twist for the viewers.
"All of you are up for elimination"
"What"
"Except for Firey"
So then out of no fault of her own, Pencil now will have to face the viewers once again. After going a record of 10 episodes without being at stake. This will be the first time she tests the waters. Will things turn out well? No, of course not, this isn't a disney movie, this is BFDI. Pencil is about to get her ass whopped.
Things aren't looking good for Pencil, she is at stake for the first time in 10 episodes and tonight, something might be shattered.
Its also at this time that Leafy starts enacting revenge. She is still very bitter about the alliance taking Ice Cube away from her. And unlike Blocky, Leafy is going to be able to do some serious damage.
"Bubble, I'm giving you a gift"
"Don't open it, it could be a trap!"
"I can do what I want"
"I also have one for you too"
It certainly was a trap, since Bubble owes Leafy something now. And just like that, Bubble and Ice Cube are interested in Leafy instead of the alliance.
Pencil tried her hardest to tell them not to take the bait, but Bubble and Ice Cube fell for it, and now the alliance is weakened.
Things are looking good for Pencil, she thinks she isn't vulnerable at this cake at stake going in. But she very quickly realizes something is off. She isn't hearing her usual. "Pencil got 0 votes"
Pencil is shocked
And slowly the other contestants start getting safe. We start to learn this too.
Pencil got more than five votes
Pencil got more than seven votes
Pencil got more than ten votes
Spongy, even Spongy places better than Pencil
The realization is finally setting in, Pencil is not nearly as safe as she thought she was.
"On April 1st, 2011, history was made, Englishcreamcakes cast the first ever vote for Pencil"
"On no, seriously?"
"It turns out she got 37 other votes too"
"Reguardless, with 38 votes, you are safe"
"That's 38 more votes than I expected"
38 votes... Pencil got her first 38 votes and it completley blew her away, she knows she is on extremley shaky ground. She knows that if she isn't at stake with Tennis Ball and Rocky, she is screwed and will be sent home. Pencil is on thin ice, she now knows the only way she is going to survive, is if she wins immunity.
Pencil now knows just how far she is far up shit creek. She knows its up to her to keep her alliance together and to save her own skin. But just when things seem like they can't get any worse. The announcer throws another curveball at her.
"Split up into teams"
"OMG Bubble, we so have to be partners"
"Wha?"
"I'm sorry Ice Cube, I could if I can, but I can't"
"Revenge"
Already Pencil is forced to alienate Ice Cube so soon after she was the first time, but in the competition, its a better choice to pick Bubble since Pencil needs to win to stay in.
Gets scratched by water
Soon enough, Leafy now has complete control over Ice Cube again. She has become disloyal once again.
No need to worry though, as Pencil and Bubble get first, and win a huge amount of points for themselves, ensuring they will be safe for a good amount of time.
Safety at last
Then comes episode 18, the episode universally known as the one that screws Pencil over.
First right off the bat, Pencil targets Tennis Ball instead of Leafy, a surefire mistake which would cost her the rest of her game.
Because this leaves the place wide open for Leafy to wreak more havoc on the alliance.
The second thing that happens is the scores are reset only having two digit numbers.
Doing well
Screwed again
Its back up to Pencil to win immunity again. Because now Leafy is manipulating Bubble too, causing her to feel bad about herself and now feels nearly indebted to Leafy for no reason. Leafy now theretens to turn Bubble against Pencil.
So now with Pencil back to a bad place. Her alliance is falling apart at the seams. She has to do anything she can just to get more time and get Leafy out.
And so begins Pencil's REAL last stand. Its the staring contest, she has to try everything in order to stay.
Pencil wins the first round
Pencil manages to slip through and win the second round
Then it comes in the third round where Leafy starts to manipulate Bubble again, calling her the meanest person on earth. Again, pulling Bubble away from Pencil and straight into Leafy's control. Then soon enough Bubble is stuck in the middle.
"Pencil, don't your eyes hurt yet?"
"No, OMG, Bubble what has gotten into you these days?"
"Yeah, I always thought you were nice"
"You're the meanest person on earth"
And soon enough
With enough paitence
David blinks
And Pencil wins
Pencil saved herself when she needed it most, she is incredibly happy. She knew she had been playing with fire and now just in a nick of time, she bought herself a couple more months on the show. Now safe with points, she watches her score go up.
And up
Until it loops over back into the single digits
Making Pencil the lowest scoring contestant
This cruel twist of fate would become the official downfall of Pencil, she was in hot water now. In a truly unfair moment, Pencil goes from being the biggest threat into the very possible threat of going home. All because she didn't get second place.
Our final act of the story begins with Pencil at cake at stake, she now has been screwed into a position she has never been before. The cake at stake previous to her had proved that she was surely going home. Firey was loved and Spongy managed to get less votes than her at their previous cake at stake. Only a miracle is going to save Pencil. But no miracle ever comes, time is running out, Pencil has nowhere to go but down, she and her alliance will collapse in the most humiliating way possible.
Pencil pleads for mercy
Then comes that fateful cake at stake, Firey is the first contestant safe.
"I like your cake"
Pencil knows how this is going, but with all her last hope, she holds out. Until the announcer says the fateful phrase.
"I'm sorry to tell you you've been eliminated with a record of 259 votes"
Even this number seems way too high for Pencil to accept. And Pencil is swiftly eliminated in a blaze of glory.
"WHAT?"
"This machine thingy must be broken"
*zing*
That's it, without Pencil there, the alliance is dead, Bubble and Ice Cube exchange the last words of the alliance before Leafy splits them up.
"Oh no Ice Cube, with two members our alliance is too small"
"Needy's got to join"
And that concludes our epic saga, detailing the downfall of Pencil and her alliance. One of the greatest sideplots the show has ever produced. The downfall is downright so humiliating and poetic it just had to be incuded in this list. Pencil went through so many highs and lows until her eventual collapse. This compared to Pin's story makes the first one seem like garbage. Pencil fought a mean game all the way to the end, only to lose to a stupid twist that was out of her control.
The Fallen King
P.S. Wow, that was a really long article to write, I knew coming into this it would be a long one, but wow. It was three times longer than the barf bag challenge article I wrote a couple weeks back. I am still satisfied with the finished product though. Its good to know that I can finally close the chapter on this article. This really took a lot out of me, like wow. This article has over a thousand words and 190 images. I don't think that any article will top that in the near future. Its just way too large.

For those of you who don't know, Parvati is one of Survivor's greatest players. She got to the finals twice and has been on four seasons. She lead an unstoppable all-girls alliance to the end. This all girls alliance was one of the most famous alliances in the entire show.

There was Parvati, the charismatic leader and master manipulator
There was Amanda, the innocent challenge beast
There was Cirie, the sweet giggy novice
There was Alexis, the outdoorsy fighter
Then there was Natalie, the girly girl and second in command
There isn't a sixth member of the black widow brigade so Ice Cube doesn't get a player, but lets be honest here, Ice Cube has no personality and the only real comparison I could make would be a real ice cube.
P.P.P.P.P.P.P.P.S. I don't know if any of you realized this, but as I was scouring the episodes for images, I found out that Michael and Cary must have watched or liked south part at some point because I noticed this little piece of information.
For all of those who don't know, "The Poop that took a Pee" Is a book in the South Park universe. One of the characters; Butters, writes the book and becomes famous for it.
I can't believe Michael and Cary were watching South Park in the seventh grade... Shame shame.
