#22. The Smackdown - BFDI (all season long)
There have been some very famous friendships in BFDI.
THE ALLIANCE!
FIREY AND LEAFY!
THE BOYS!
Then on the other side. There have also been dozens of famous rivalries in the show.
GOLF BALL AND SNOWBALL!
GOLF BALL AND PENCIL!
GOLF BALL AND THE PRODUCERS!
ERASER AND HIS ARMS!
But none of these rivalries could compare to the greatest rivalry of all time. You all know what I am talking about. The poster rivalry of BFDI.
The Slappers
That's right. Today I will be covering the most legendary, bizzare and signifigant rivalries in BFDI.
Back in the early months of BFDI. There were really only two storylines to follow. The first was the alliance.
The Alliance plus Bubble
And the second storyline was the ever vocal arch enemyship of Firey and Coiny. And their legendary slapfights.
"I can slap too!"
There was actually a third storyline. The Coiny-Needle-Snowball love triangle.
Peak quality TV
So back in the old days of BFDI, this was one of the only things that an audience could rely on. Between the personalities which weren't set in stone. And the hodge podge of challenges and ideas. It surmised to make the first few episodes of BFDI a bit of a disjointed cluster. But Firey and Coiny remained consistent in their actions, so they became a centerpoint of classic BFDI.
The rivaly officially began before we ever got to see it. The audience was left completley in the dark about what actually caused those two to dislike each other.
"Coiny, you're so dumb"
*slap*
"Hey!"
"Oh my Gosh! Firey, you are so easy to slap!"
Coiny: 11
Firey: 0
The Next time we see the rivalry continue is later in the episode.
"Yeah Match, you made a good choice!"
"Yeah... as if"
Now onto episode 2. This is the point where Firey starts fighting back.
*blows rasberry*
"Grrr"
Firey turns into a pro volleyball player
It happens again in the same episode
*punch*
Two things I love about this scene.
First, Teardrop is just sitting in the background watching this whole ordeal go down while giving outa malitious grin.
Second, Coiny is still sirking as he's getting launched into the air
Coiny: 11
Firey: 2
So after this, Firey and Coiny actually don't slap each other for a long time. Instead they only exchange a couple laughs at each other.
"Whoa"
"Ha Ha"
"Are you using a actual oven? Mann, I got my own way of burning food"
Shit eating grin
"Hey put me down!"
Now here is probably the most surprising part of the entry. Firey and Coiny don't interact for three whole episodes after that. Not a single interaction happens between them. It's only when Firey is forced to join the Squashy Grapes that the dysfunction renews itself.
"STAB"
Time to spin the wheel
*splat*
"Aha! Karma's awesome"
After this episode, the rivalry goes from a quirky sideplot to one of the main focuses. Because this episode features a twist which would screw torpedo Firey and Coiny's game.
"You'll be divided into two teams of five"
"But wait, then Firey goes to my team!"
"And he's just so dumb!"
The Return of the slap
Keep in mind that we haven't seen Firey or Coiny slap each other for seven episodes, so even getting one slap was a wave of nostalgia for the audience. The feud would very quickly esclate into some intense (slap)fighting. We even get a second session of slapping later in the episode. After Golf Ball's wonderful leadership results in Firey and Coiny being tied right next to each other.
"Grrr"
"Aah!"
Golf Ball: Aren't races like this great?
"Yeah, and if we could walk in synchrony..."
"It would be even BETTER!"
"Hey, it slimed me!"
Coiny: 14
Firey: 8
In the next episode, we get some more classic rivalry scenes.
Now for the fans who don't know this fact. The official canon reason why Firey started hating Coiny was because of an instance that happened in a prequel comic series. The comic was called Total Firey Island. And it is the true origin of the Firey-Coiny fight. The incident happened during the first challenge, which was a crying contest. And this whole scene from episode 10 references the origins of the rivalry.
Firey: Oh no, Crying... no no NONO!
Coiny: So?
Firey: Don't you know? Crying? Tears?
Firey: Water is my POISON!
Coiny: Sorry, I forgot
Coiny: 22
Firey: 16
So there is the true origin of the slapfight. But don't worry we're not done yet, these people still have some more slapping to do. Even in the same episode. There is a none tie-breaking tie breaker.
Announcer: It's a handstand contest
And with one team full of armless contestants, the first three to fall are pretty obvious
First is Golf Ball
Then it's Tennis Ball
And then Rocky
This is where their dynfunction truly costs them the win.
*splat*
Coiny: Ha Ha
Also since I might not get another opportunity to mention this, but this might be one of my favourite sequences in BFDI.
Okay so episode eleven now. This is probably the most famous of the slapfights. I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about.
Firey and Coiny slap each other to the beat of a metronome
If you think the counter is going to continue, screw you, that's enough counting for one day.
Following the elimination, Golf Ball and Rocky are removed from the team. Leaving Tennis Ball, Firey, and Coiny on a tiny team of three.
Tennis Ball has something to say about that.
Firey and Coiny shrink half in size and continue to slap
And then to cap off the episode. Their inability to work together forced them into the same position as they were before.
Smooth move, Coiny
And with that definitive move, Coiny would kill his chances at winning the game. Because he was voted off in the next episode.
Not before Coiny Gets one last slap in
And now since Coiny has been eliminated. The Rivalry is officially over, and Firey can move on.
sort of...
After that episode, we don't get to see much more of the rivalry. However, Coiny does get a chance to slap Firey when he peeks into the TLC.
"Oh hello, Coiny, it's good to see you where you finally belong"
*slapping noises*
After that, the famous rivaly officially comes to an end.
Mostly because of this too
But for now, that is the end of the official Rivalry.
Now I know that some of you are annoyed I didn't include some of the quips some of the characters had for each other. That is because I plan to include them in an entry for later down the road. Stay tuned.
Something important that I think needs to be noted about the Firey vs. Coiny feuds is that it wasn't nearly as common as you and the rest of the audience might have thought. The pair go through an entire seven episodes until they actually slap each other again. If you look even closer and really examine their interactions, the rivalry really only existed for four episodes, only for it to swiftly disappear as soon as Coiny is booted off the show.
It's absurd to realize how much this dynamic was played up, these were some of BFDI's biggest talking points at the time. And it's surprising that this big topic issue was only on for a short time on the show.
P.S. I can't belive it's taken me this long to realize this, but I seriously love how each slapfight was different. They didn't stick to the same slapping format, and instead chose to experiment with the speed, and style.
P.P.S. Another thing I picked up on when I was watching Battle for Dream Island that I've always wanted a proper chance to point out is that people shouldn't be so quick to judge Firey as the good guy and Coiny as the bad guy. When you actually take a look at their disagreements with a keen eye, you will notice a trend. Firey is the instigator, 99% of the time, he is the one who causes the conflict. While Coiny is the reactor, he takes Firey's insults and reacts to them with physical violence. It takes two people to start a fight, and Firey should share the blame for starting them too.
And if you are wondering how I know this stuff. I have a brother.
P.P.P.S. You can read the Total Firey Islands books by clicking here.
P.P.P.P.S. Fun fact, the handstand gif I mentioned before actually was planned to get it's own article. However, seeing as the scene was a 15 second clip, there wasn't nearly enough content to do a proper article about it. Especially this far into the countdown. So I canceled it and replaced the article with a new one.
P.P.P.P.P.S. I asked you guys recently to photoshop Coiny and Firey as volleyball players because of Firey's suprising ability to launch Coiny fifty feet into the air. Then it evolved to "how could Firey torture coiny the most?"
