The Hive Support project is an open-ended design project with the aim to provide solutions that address identified operational challenges in the day-to-day operations of the Van Leer Interdisciplinary Design Commons (IDC). The Hive is a student organization that staffs student Peer Instructors (PIs) to provide operational support and basic instruction in the use of IDC equipment.

Due to the nature of a student organization, the Hive staff will change with each semester which highlights the importance of simplicity in processes and procedures. With feedback from the Hive PIs, the subject of the Hive Support project is to design of a microprocessor controlled locking system for the senior design project storage lockers with minimal required interaction from the Hive or IDC personnel.

To provide access to the lockers, it is proposed that a senior design group be able to register its team member’s BuzzCards during setup. Following registration, access to the locker will be granted by reading the RF identifier embedded in all active BuzzCards. The members of Team FACKZ selected the Hive Support project as a means of giving back to the Georgia Tech community. The result was a project subject that focuses on solving a problem identified by students, a solution created by students, and for the benefit of future students.
