BREAKING NEWS: The New York Knicks and Minnesota Timberwolves have finalized a trade to send three time all star Julius Randle, sharp shooter Donte DiVincenzo, and a protected 2025 first round pick courtesy of the Detroit Pistons to Minnesota in exchange for 2015 first overall pick, rookie of the year, and four time NBA all star Karl-Anthony Towns. The Charlotte Hornets have also helped aid financially with the trade.
The main reason for this trade was salary cap issues concerning the Timberwolves. However, they look to add depth to their roster with Randle and DiVincenzo. Six players on Minnesota averaged a 40%+ three point percentage during the 2023-24 season and Donte DiVincenzo will be the seventh on the roster to accomplish this. The NBA average for the season sat around 36.6% improving from the previous 36.1% in 2022-23. Minnesota will now have a strong mix of perimeter shooting to go along with the paint play of Julius Randle, Naz Reid, Rudy Gobert, and Jaden McDaniels. Despite losing the 3-point champion Towns, Julius Randle adds his own strong shooting to the lineup. Last season, he averaged a 47% field goal percentage to pair with shooting almost 80% from the charity stripe (free throw line). After finishing third in the Western Conference in the regular season last year, they made a run to the conference finals before being taken down by the Mavericks. The newest additions of Randle and DiVincenzo will add strength to the Minnesota lineup and the 2025 draft class talent will present young opportunities for the Timberwolves.
On the flip side, Karl-Anthony Towns has had a potential hall of fame career averaging 20+ points in eight of his nine seasons in the NBA. He will certainly fill the Knicks' void of having a big man. Not only can Karl-Anthony Towns average a career 10.8 rebounds, he can also put on a three point spectacle averaging between 2.2 and 5.3 made per night (2023-24). The Knicks have struggled for years with having a reliable center bouncing between players such as Julius Randle, Taj Gibson, and Mitchell Robinson. Now, they will have stability and strength in Towns adding a unique arsenal of his own. With Jalen Brunson recently signing a 4-year extension, the skies the limit for the New York Knicks' in the next few years. However, with the Timberwolves being in a salary cap jam, the Knicks could have limited the amount of assets they gave up and worked hard to negotiate a better deal and pry more out of Minnesota.
Anthony Edwards and Karl-Anthony Towns have been a dynamic duo leading the Timberwolves for multiple years and the New York Knicks have been guided by Julius Randle and Jalen Brunson. With Randle and Towns swapping teams, their roles will be swapped as well. It will be interesting to see how the new duos work together and if the chemistry improves, or declines, from previous seasons.
