How does it work?
AFL Fantasy Classic is a season-long competition where you become the coach of your own virtual AFL team. The goal is to score as many points as possible each week by selecting real AFL players, whose on-field performances translate directly into fantasy points. The nation-wide competition includes around 150,000 coaches who are all competing for the ultimate prize of a brand new Toyota Hilux and the chance at winning the much-lauded Top-100 Hat to claim bragging rights as one of Australia's 100 best AFL Fantasy Coaches.
Structure of Play
You start with a set salary cap to build a squad of 30 players (on-field and bench).
Players earn fantasy points during real AFL matches based on their stats (e.g. kicks, handballs, tackles).
Your weekly team score is the total points from your selected on-field players.
Key Rules
Each player’s price changes throughout the season, depending on form.
You can make a limited number of trades each week (usually two, with extra trades during byes).
A captain (double points) and vice-captain must be selected.
Bench players can provide emergency cover if one of your on-field players doesn’t play.
Weekly Must-Dos
Check team announcements – ensure all your players are named to play.
Make trades – upgrade underperforming players or bring in rising stars.
Set your lineup – choose who starts on field and assign your captain.
Monitor injuries, suspensions, and price changes – staying active is key to climbing the rankings.
With smart trades, sharp captaincy calls, and consistent attention, you’ll give yourself the best chance to dominate your AFL Fantasy league!
30 green dots is a must
Under priced players who will outscore 'priced at’ point to make money
Rookies must have job security with points scoring ability (avoid small forwards) Consider that you might need to pay up.
Medium pricers can be picked with upside (new role, new club, etc)
Avoid top end prices (Trends indicate that players will drop in price and can be traded in when your value players top out)
Value Starting Pick Options
Nic Newman returns after a season ending injury. He is a high points per minute half back who racks up possessions. If he is back to his half back role and returns to KI from the goal square he is considerable value and a great starting pick.
In 2025 he played 22 games, averaged about 18 disposals per game and finished fourth in the Rising Star count . Drafted at No.6 in the 2024 AFL Draft, with veteran midfielders Clayton Oliver and Christian Petracca now gone, there’s greater opportunity for Langford to rotate through the guts
Currently injured - Will Day is a high-upside but high-risk starting pick. When fit, his elite endurance and outside run allow him to rack up uncontested ball, but his injury history and growing tag attention remain concerns. Without Worpel, the ceiling is massive — though the risk is firmly baked in.
Jack Steele has a proven fantasy pedigree — he’s shown elite scoring ability when locked into consistent midfield minutes. Now at Melbourne with full-time mid minutes, he’s in prime position to deliver big fantasy scores week to week with 5-10 point upside. A steele at $1.06m before his price rises
Sam Flanders is one of the cheapest options with genuine fantasy scoring upside. His ability to consistently pile up uncontested possessions makes him a compelling value pick. With a move to St Kilda and increased midfield minutes, Flanders now has the role opportunity to turn that cheap price into reliable weekly points
A rookie-priced option developed through the Brisbane Lions’ midfield system with AFL experience, including a Grand Final appearance. He’s shown strong ball-winning ability at VFL level and now, at West Coast, has the opportunity for regular midfield minutes. If he locks in that role, he shapes as a sneaky value pick with genuine upside.
In a traditional sense, Darcy Parish has considerable upside returning to an unsettled Essendon midfield from injury. A proven high points per minute player, Parish has averaged above 90 FP between 2021 - 2024 and his inside/outside capabilities suit fantasy scoring. If he can remain fit and achieve 70% CBA, he could be an excellent starting pick
Coming back from an ACL might not be a sensible fantasy pick, however, priced at 53.5 Coleman has scoring pedigree to outscore this by 25-30 points if the HB role is secure due to Brisbane Lions marketshare scoring. An outstanding finish to 2023 and a heavy discount make this an enticing starting pick. He does have the round 2 bye and the 2025 defensive structure including Wilmot, Zorko, Fletcher may require significant change to squeeze in this talented defender.
