Conclusion

Polanski uses various filmographic techniques in the last scene of Chinatown to represent the city’s rivalry with the superfluous plans for distension into the suburbs. He erects boarders and achieves a sense of absolute division between these two different kinds of living spaces, making the argument that the suburbs are fantastical, far from life-like, and an enemy to the dynamism of the urban sphere.

The water scandal that is uncovered during J.J.’s investigation reveals the greed of prominent city oligarchs and their disregard for the citizens of the city. This raises questions not only about the city’s socio-dynamics, but also about the value of sprawl and what impact this may have on the city. To better understand the city’s substance, we are literally put in Gittes’ seat at the start of the last scene in the movie.
