Years ago, my friend Beth agreed to take her brother in law's dog and care for it, while he went on a trip. The little dog, a purebred Coton de Tulear named Sophie (see picture to the left), would yelp whenever anyone touched her. She barked incessantly. She was often agressive with other dogs. But, she could be quite sweet as well.
Beth began to cook recipes from this cookbook for Sophie. At first she mixed it with the dog's usual kibble. But little by little she weaned it off all commercial dog chow and gave it only homemade, from recipes in "The Canine Culinary Dog Food Cookbook." As she did, it was like a miracle happened. Sophie stopped yelping when touched. She calmed down, esepcially around other dogs. She barked less. And when her brother in law came home, he could not believe the change.
"What have you done to my dog?" he asked.
"I fed her good food, Carl. I think she was in a lot of pain, that's why she was so ornery and barky. That kibble has some dubious ingredients. I think they were causing inflammation. You know, dogs cannot tell you they hurt in so many words. So they yelp when touched."
Sure enough, Carl made an almost permanent change to homemade dog food. And little Sophie was visibly better for it.
