Three hundred and eighteen First World War Canadian soldiers and nurses are buried at St Mary's Bramshott. Canada Day in Liphook has been marked since the Second World War. Canada Wednesday, the Wednesday nearest to Canada's national day on the 1st July, has been marked by the school since 2005.
Each year the children of Liphook C of E Junior School Year 4 take part in a rich local history topic exploring the reasons why these Canadians are in their village. They choose a soldier and use the Canadian Archives to discover personal details about them. With this information, they create poetry, letters and artwork to open a window to the past. On the last Wednesday of June they take part in the village service, laying a maple leaf on the grave of their chosen soldier. This is followed by a multimedia performance showcasing all of the children's learning.
This website will aim to collate the historical evidence such as personnel records, censuses, photos and maps which underpins this local history work.
