All students are expected to attend classes regularly and on time. When a child is absent due to illness or any other reason, it is the responsibility of the parent or guardian to provide a written excuse explaining the cause of absence. If a student is ill for several days, he/she will have 1 day per each day missed to complete any assignments.
Lake Como School believes coming to school on time, and well prepared, is important for our students' success. Your child is considered tardy after 8:45 AM. Students who are late to school must report to the front office for a tardy slip. Per OCPS policy, students who have 5 tardies per marking period will receive 1 unexcused absence. The 7th grade team may also request a parent conference to assist any student to be successful in arriving to school on time.
If your child has an upcoming planned absence, please e-mail me a week before the event so I may assist your child.
Please remember if you plan to attend any events on campus during the school day including class events, volunteer on campus, or chaperone a field trip, you must be ADDitions approved. All visitors planning to come on campus for any events or chaperone any trips MUST be ADDitions approved. The process to become approved is very quick and must be completed each year. You can update your profile by visiting volunteer.ocps.net. Please take a few moments to renew your ADDitions profile, as it expired at the end of last school year.

OCPS Cell Phone Policy for Students: "A student may possess a cell phone on school property, at after school activities, and at school-related functions, provided that during school hours and on a school bus, the cell phone remains off and is concealed.
Per the OCPS 2021-22 Code of Conduct, Violations of this policy may result in confiscation of the cell phone and/or other disciplinary actions. If confiscated, the parent/guardian will make arrangements to pick up the cell phone from the school. At no time shall OCPS be responsible for theft, loss or damage to cell phones or other electronic devices brought onto its property."
Students may call or text with a parent or guardian with permission if a teacher feels it is necessary, such as dismissal questions or changes. Permission will not be giving to your child to contact you for forgotten items or assignments.
The School Board of Orange County, Florida (Board) Policy JIC, titled “Code of Student Conduct,” in addition to Section 1006.07, Florida Statutes, requires the adoption of a Code of Student Conduct (Code). Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) has developed the Code to help students, parents/guardians, and school personnel understand the guidelines for maintaining a safe and orderly learning environment. The Code shall be discussed with students, school advisory committees, and parent/teacher associations at the beginning of each school year and quarterly thereafter and for transferring students upon their enrollment.
In order to conserve resources, schools will not distribute paper copies of the Code to every student. An electronic copy of the Code can be found online at the District website: www.codeofconduct.ocps.net, on the OCPS app, or on OCPS school-issued devices. If you require a paper copy of the Code, please notify your OCPS school.
The Code applies to all OCPS students in Kindergarten through Grade 12, including high school and school age students attending either a technical center in a dual-enrollment program or a community school program for high school credit.
Each OCPS student must obey OCPS rules and the Code:
While on school grounds;
While being transported to or from school at public expense;
During school-sponsored activities, including, but not limited to distance learning, field trips, athletic functions, and similar activities; and
If appropriate, any other area as permitted by Florida Statutes and/or State Board of Education Rules.
Schools may also have the authority to discipline students for acts near or related to the school or when a student’s conduct may harm the health, safety, or welfare of the student, of other students, of the school or of school personnel. In addition, while students may be disciplined for offenses according to the responses outlined in the Code, please be aware that there could be additional consequences through law enforcement for acts that violate the law.
This year we’ll be encouraging positive skills, like perseverance and teamwork, with ClassDojo. We’ll also rely on it to communicate with one another: instantly sharing messages, updates, events, and photos from class. It’s simple, secure, and gives you a window into their school day!
I’d like all families to join me by signing up for a parent account on ClassDojo! You can use it on any device: it’s a simple, free mobile app for iOS and Android, and can also be accessed from your computer at classdojo.com.
Principal Patriarch sends a message through the Connect Ed voice system every Sunday around 7pm. Please make sure the office has your up to date phone number and other information.
We believe your child's success is dependent upon a positive relationship and strong communication between teachers, students, and parents.
If you ever have a question or concern, the best way to reach me via e-mail. or Class Dojo. Please allow 48 hours for a response, especially for e-mails sent after school hours or weekends.
Please visit Lake Como K-9 School's school website for other important information.
There will be no formally assigned homework in my classes this year. Research has NOT been able to prove that homework improves student performance.
Therefore, my homework policy will consist only of:
completing and submitting assignments that your child missed or did not finish at school
completing homework from other teachers such as math practice, iReady, and reading a great book
Since I do not assign homework packets, please spend an evening engaged in activities that are proven to correlate with student success and drawing families together such as dining together as a family, reading and discussing books together, playing outside, and have your child go to bed on time so she/he are ready for the challenges of the next day.
It’s a fact that students who eat nutritious meals perform better in school. Orange County Public Schools Food & Nutrition Services Department makes it possible for all students, even those who do not qualify for free meals, to receive healthy and nutritious meals daily regardless of the available funds in their food services account. More information can be found here.

Students may eat a healthy snack in the classrooms. Please send in healthy choices that can be eaten quickly. Examples: crackers, cheese, half a sandwich, fruits, yogurt. Candy, cookies, sweets, and sugary treats will not be allowed as a snack.
Students may also keep a water bottle (no juices, sports drinks, or sodas) at their desks.
Students are responsible to bring their OCPS laptop to school everyday and their device should be fully charged before school. Thank you for your help in this matter.
