Transforming Classrooms into Healing Spaces: The Calming Corner Project turns a tiny, unused corner of the classroom into a cozy "reset button" for students. When students experience overwhelming anger, anxiety, sadness, or sensory overload, they can step into this safe space to process big emotions. Instead of facing traditional discipline or being sent to the principal's office, students use simple tools to build lifelong self-regulation skills, calming their mind and body so they can return to class ready to learn. This project is rooted in the “peace corner” concept pioneered by Dr. Maria Montessori in the 20th century, which is also practiced in schools in San Diego, California, and other parts of the world. This is neither a new idea nor an attempt to reinvent the wheel, but rather an effort to build on existing approach.
Building Wellness in Schools: By teaching students how to manage severe distress early, this project promotes emotional wellness, fosters safer school environments, reduces classroom aggression, and helps prevent long-term mental health challenges. After all, one of the many ways to make the world abetter place is by teaching emotional regulation. When we learn how to calm ourselves, especially during difficult moments, we can think more clearly, make better choices, and build a healthier school community.
Not at all. Real change takes a community. I collaborate with friends and everyday citizens, and we volunteer our time to address root causes like trauma and stress in schools across the Philippines. The Calming Corner Initiative isn't a business; it's a form of Bayanihan, a classic Filipino spirit where, the moment someone needs help, the whole neighborhood rolls up their sleeves to lift each other up.
