The overtly sexual posed female subject, although controversial, was embraced by Pan Yuliang. In the painting, the figure is spread across a tilted chaise, her full breasts, and round buttocks in plain view, arms drawn away from the torso creating a vulnerability. Although exposed, the subject’s crossed legs project outward, and posture hides her pubic area verifying modesty. The rich red hue of pert nipples resembles the rouged color of the face that suggested an alcohol-induced nap. The entire composition’s interior is vibrant and intensely colored, but Pan nude dominates her surroundings by tilting the bed and table towards the viewer. In contrast to the interior, the window peering outside to an undistinguished landscape but allows the viewer to settle their gaze on the female subjects. The sexual sense of this oil painting is secondary to the dramatic pictorial effects and technical excellence of Pan’s work.
