About Me

My passion for leadership is deeply rooted in Appalachia. I am a proud, lifelong Pike County, Kentucky resident, and a first-generation college graduate. I completed a Bachelor's degree in English at the University of Pikeville (Pikeville College at the time), a Master's Degree in English from Morehead State University, a Master's in Fine Arts in Creative Writing at West Virginia Wesleyan College, and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership at Northwest Nazarene University. I have sixteen years of experience in higher education as a professor of Appalachian Literature and Creative Writing and as an administrator.

I have spent my career exploring and celebrating Appalachia's unique culture. As a writer, I am drawn to the power of storytelling for connection. As a leader, I believe that every person has the potential to make innovative change and a positive impact on their community. The Appalachian Way is more than a research project. I believe it has the potential to inspire and empower individuals to become more effective leaders, not just in Appalachia but in any context where culture and heritage play a role in shaping leadership style.
