The 2020-2021 school year has brought many changes into Uni's staff faculty, and so far, the school has welcomed seven new staff members.
The counseling office welcomed both Marci Banner and Norma Uribe. Ms. Banner will be in charge of counseling the grades 10-12 and Ms. Uribe will be in charge of the upcoming freshmen and AVID students.
Besides new counselors, there are a variety of new teachers. To start off, Mr. Robert Bailey and Mr. Wassim Issa are the new special education teachers. Next on is Mr. Paolo Villafana, who fortunately, many students may know as the student-teacher from Neely’s class. Mr. Villafana is now an official math teacher for the Magnet program. In the music department, we have Sean Longstreet, who teaches instrumental music. Lastly, we have Mr. Mathew Landis, a new history teacher.
In addition to the incoming staff, some of Uni’s existing staff has transitioned to new positions. The position for APSCS has been filled by Ms. Michelle Tucker Jones. Also, Mr. James Yan is currently transitioning to the resource specialist program where he will be providing specialized instruction to students who need it.
It is said that “every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end," and as we welcome Uni’s new staff we must honor the retirees. Mr. Clotzman, one of Uni’s favorite government teachers, has left to spend his time reading new books. He hopes his students remember him as someone who “made their time in class enjoyable, productive, and worth the effort."
Two of Uni’s counselors, Ms. Gray and Mr. Kessler, have retired to start off their own new beginnings. Sadly, Mr. Loeffer has also retired from the Special Education Department, and Uni celebrates Mr. Satti, as he left LAUSD for a new promotion.
For the new members of the Uni family, we welcome you and thank you for wanting to help students in their learning development and academic journey by teaching or counseling. For the former Uni staff who are leaving, thank you for everything you have done for students and you will always be a part of the Uni family.
