The Definition of an "Election": Why Virginia's Redistricting was Struck Down

On May 8, 2026, the Virginia Supreme Court issued a ruling invalidating the results of Virginia’s April 21st redistricting referendum. In its opinion, the Court held that the Commonwealth failed to follow the amendment process outlined in Article XII, Section 1 of the Constitution of Virginia.
