Someone may want you for your body as a status symbol, a trophy, an accessory to adorn his or her ego. They may want you for your social or professional status. They may want you only for the good times, gratification, entertainment, pleasure. They may want you for their comfort and convenience. They may put you on a pedestal and like only the nice parts. This is not real love. This is both of you using each other to satisfy the needs of your ego.

If you are seeking validation from a partner to affirm your sense of self-worth, you have low self-esteem due to a lack of self-awareness. You will continue to base your value on superficial qualities, and your partner will continue to judge you based on it. You will keep trying to save your partner, because you cannot fix yourself. Your partner will keep victimizing themselves, because they are entitled, and cannot take accountability for their own issues. If you are being used and using your partner, then both of you are disconnected from your own selves and others.

If your relationship is based on love, it is real because it has incredible depth. It is based on healthy boundaries, because both partners have a strong sense of inner self-worth that is not dependent on external validation. They respect themselves, and share a mutual admiration for each other, which builds the foundation of trust. Without respect, there is no trust. Without trust, there is no love. Without love, your relationship will always leave you feeling empty, dissatisfied, and wanting more.

The song "Superficial Love" by Ruth B. talks about the desire for a deeper and authentic connection in a relationship, rather than just surface-level attraction. The lyrics explore the frustration of being with someone who only sees what they want to see and doesn't appreciate the flaws and complexities of their partner. The singer emphasizes the importance of real love, where both partners can be themselves and see each other for who they truly are.

The chorus, "This superficial love thing got me going crazy, baby if you want me, then you better need me," reveals the singer's unwillingness to settle for a relationship that is only based on external attraction. She demands to be valued and treated like a priority, rather than as an option.

Psychology Today writer Chamin Ajjan mentioned that the messaging is produced by the entertainment industry, advertisers, social media, and more. Holiday movies, ad campaigns, and other things can influence how someone views their relationship progress well into and beyond the season itself. It can make people think that by the holidays, a relationship should be the end all be all to complete the experience.

Having the desire to be in a relationship is one thing; however, having the skills and tools that will allow that relationship to flourish is an entirely different conversation. It should exist before picking out the perfect pajama pair.

Outside of the superficial things the holiday time can make you believe about relationships, those that even make it to this stage are cultivated and primed to be ones that can exist even after this time has passed.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the students were overwhelmingly critical of the Supreme Court decision. Harvard, after all, is an extremely progressive campus. It makes sense that most of the undergraduates there would support affirmative action. But even so, the level of conformity expressed in The Crimson was still astonishing. Of the 21 responses in the article, not a single one dissented from the view that the banning of affirmative action was anything less than a tragedy.

It would be one thing if affirmative action was just generally popular. In that case, the unanimity of opinion at Harvard might not be so bizarre. But only about a quarter of Americans think that colleges should be able to consider an applicant’s race when making admissions decisions.

Above all, what this shows is that progressives have an astonishingly shallow definition of diversity. According to many on the left, diversity has everything to do with superficial qualities like race and little to do with the more interesting things like someone’s life experience or their political outlook. In fact, for many progressives, the ideal form of diversity is a bunch of people who look differently but think exactly the same.

Progressives can call that diversity if they’d like, but I would submit that there is something deeply misguided about an understanding of diversity that can be evaluated solely by measuring the amount of melanin in a population. Building an affirmative action scheme atop this definition is how a school like Harvard ends up with more students from the top 1% of the income scale than the bottom 50% and fewer than 1 in 10 students coming from rural areas.

More important than the demographic stats, though, is that Harvard’s superficial definition of diversity is totally agnostic about, or even antagonistic to, opinion diversity. This is how you wind up with The Crimson publishing 21 student blurbs about affirmative action without a single one reflecting what most Americans think — that universities should not discriminate based on race. It turns out that if the only type of diversity you care about is racial diversity, you end up neglecting the kind that matters most.
